Frankfort's Most Dangerous Intersections: Where Are They?

Village Trustee Dick Trevarthan recently brought up his concerns about the dangers of Sauk Trail and Pfeiffer Road. Are there other traffic spots in Frankfort that worry you? Tell us.

  • CORRECTION: An earlier version of the story listed the incorrect amount for the cost of a four-way traffic signal at Sauk Trail and Pfeiffer Road. The correct cost is $300,000.

It wasn't on the agenda of the last week, but it was definitely on the mind of Village Board Trustee Dick Trevarthan.

What's being done with Sauk Trail and Pfeiffer Road?

This isn't the first time Trevarthan has brought up the matter at a commission meeting. With its poor sight lines and confusing two-way stop, the intersection--and the accidents that occur there--is a concern that has been discussed before at Traffic Advisory Committee meetings, said Village Administrator Jerry Ducay.

"The whole issue with that intersection is that people are going through the intersection and, for whatever reason, believe that one direction doesn't have to stop," said Rob Piscia, assistant village administrator.

The committee's recommendation has been to install a four-way traffic signal, but that would cost $300,000, which the village can't afford, Ducay said. However, the matter of the intersection will be on the agenda of the next Traffic Advisory Committee meeting.

With winter weather--and the harsh driving conditions it brings--just around the corner, what intersections do you think are the most dangerous in Frankfort? Is Harlem Avenue and U.S. Route 30 particularly treacherous because of the construction? And speaking of construction, what about Center and Laraway roads?

Take the poll and tell us why you think a certain intersection is a problem. We'll map out the locations, take a look at how many accidents occur there and find out if the village needs to take any action.

80th and Laraway, and also Pfeiffer and Laraway are difficult to cross or turn left onto Laraway Road. Especially since the speed limit was raised..

I think it would be a great idea to make the entire median between Colorado Ave. and Rt. 30 into a left and right turn lane. It's so scarey turning left out of the Walt's parking lot or the McDonald's parking lot and onto southbound Rt. 45.

I suppose it depends on the time of day. I've never had an issue turning onto Laraway from Pfeiffer. I wish the speed limit would go back up to 55 mph between Harlem and Rt. 45. This excludes rush hour; in that case, the majority of the streets along Rt. 30 are horrible (especially 93rd Ave., Locust St. or 104th Ave. @ Rt. 30).
