Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Residents should continue to monitor weather reports and advisories because the intense heat could last for several days.
  • Be aware of the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and an inadequate replacement of fluids. Heat stroke is more serious, occurring when the body is unable to regulate itself. Symptoms are an extremely high body temperature of 103 or above, dizziness and nausea, a throbbing headache, rapid pulse and red, hot, dry skin. Heat stroke is an emergency, so if you or a loved one is showing symptoms, call 911.
  • Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. During hot weather, the car interior can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
