Tinley Park's $43M Budget for 2014: How Does It Compare to Past Years?

Before an almost empty gallery Tuesday, the Tinley Park Village Board presented its proposed balanced operating budget of about $43 million for the 2014 fiscal year. It's a proposed budget that also sees increases in both revenues and expenditures over the previous year.

The proposed general fund budget allocates around $43.4 million in spending for the village's day-to-day operations and projects about $43.8 million in revenues. The expected 5.42-percent bump in spending comes primarily from increases health-insurance costs. In fact, Trustee Greg Hannon pointed out at the Tuesday, April 16, board meeting that 1.56 percent of the overall budget increase is related to health-insurance.

As the 2013 fiscal year winds down, village officials expect about a $3.2 million surplus, thanks to lower-than-expected salaries and a mild winter that kept snow removal crews in the garage instead of out on the street.

The village's fiscal year begins May 1, and the board is expected to approve the budget at a special April 23 meeting. The budget can be viewed during business hours at the village clerk's office. A public hearing for residents to voice comments on the budget was held before Tuesday's meeting, but no one spoke.

Over the next week, Patch will break down parts of the 2014 budget, looking at personnel expenses, as well as the other areas, such as capital projects and sewer and water maintenance, that bring the overall budget total to $100.4 million.
