The Gist breaks down boring yet important government stories to their bare essentials.

The Gist:

The Tinley Park Village Board Finance and Economic Development Committee considered a 2012 budget request from the marketing department for $489,674. If the full board approves it, that will be a $104,268 increase (27 percent) increase over last year.

Some Numbers:

Here's how the increase breaks down approximately:

$10,000 for extra printing for additional visitors guides and summer events and holiday brochures

$55,400 for the and holiday decorations including a new Oak Park Avenue tree and equipment for the new 80th Avenue Metra station (one-time costs)

$5,500 for set design enhancements for software and hardware replacement for the municipal TV station

$23,000 for 55 new banners along Oak Park Avenue (this replaces the
equally priced flower baskets)

$4,125 in extra cost for a marketing assistant to go from 15 to 20 hours a week

Down the Road:

Most of these costs are one-time costs (like the convention center opening festivities) or costs that won't come again for a few years (like the new downtown tree and the lamp post banners along Oak Park Avenue). The full village board has yet to approve this budget.
