Village One Step Closer to Cell Phone Towers on District 140 Property

The final vote will come June 17, but trustees have given preliminary approval to the two towers.

Tinley Park trustees Tuesday gave preliminary approval to plans that would erect two cell phone towers on Kirby District 140 school grounds.

Trustees will vote again on the board's June 17 meeting, following this week's precursory OK for two, 121-foot-tall cellular towers to be erected at  Christa McAuliffe and Helen Keller schools, which AT&T said are necessary to provide cellular service in the area.

Residents in attendance at the meeting called the towers "eye sores" and "monstrosities," and that property values will suffer.

“Nobody knows that until you go to sell your home,” said resident Pat O’Keefe. “That (tower) is going to be a factor.”

The towers would mean $1,850 per location per month paid to the Kirby School District, with an annual 3 percent increase. The school board approved the agreement in November.
