25 Years of Devastation to State Support of Illinois Public Universities
We take a look at the ten most drastic shifts in state support for Illinois public institutions, documenting the changes in the share of revenue from state support in 1987 to 2012.
On Thursday, Illinois state university presidents addressed an Illinois Senate committee to warn of peril if the state continues to cut funding for higher education.
“Our tuition has doubled over the last several years at our institution as well as most others. We had to make up for that loss of state funds and these families just can’t afford it. The average family income in southern Illinois is $36,000 a year,” said Southern Illinois University President Glenn Poshard.
State support for public higher education institutions has been on a steady decline, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. We take a look at the Illinois public universities with the 10 biggest declines here.
