Andrew Senior's Art Earns First Runner-Up Honors in Tollway Contest

Michael Barrios wins $300 in gift certificates for his artwork that illustrated the theme, Remembering Our Veterans, as part of the 2013 Illinois Tollway Map Cover Art Contest.

Michael Barrios, a senior at Andrew High School, was the first runner-up in the 2013 lllinois Tollway Map Cover Art Contest for his art that illustrated this year's theme, Remembering Our Veterans, the agency announced in a press release this week.

As a runner-up, Barrios won $200 in gift certificates from Highland Park-based Blick Art Materials and $100 in gift certificates from U.S. Equities Realty in Chicago, the release said. His artwork also will be featured in the agency's annual report, the release added.

The contest received 57 entries from high school students around the region, the report stated. Barrios's artwork, along with the art of the contest's 10 semi-finalists, is on display at the seven tollway rest areas, the release continued. The artwork will be auctioned off, and the proceeds will go to support veterans’ charities, the report added.

This year's contest winner was Abby Friedman from Highland Park High School, and her art will be on the cover of the tollway’s 2013 map, the report stated.
