Bremen Schools' Taxes Increase 1.4 Percent

A reassessment of the District 228's equalized assessed value resulted in a 16 percent decrease from 2010 to 2011.

The ’s contribution to your tax bill increased slightly over last year.

The property tax extension for the district rose 1.4 percent, or about $14 for every $1,000 of property value, from 2010 to last year.

Superintendent Bill Kendall, who recently addressed questions from some community members regarding their growing tax bills, credits the increase to the property tax assessment cycle catching up.

“It’s important to note that this increase is not because of action taken by ,” Kendall said. Some of our residents have seen increases because assessments occur every three years and this is the year for that reassessment.”

The overall equalized assessed value for the district decreased by more than $290 million, or about 16 percent, in 2011. This, coupled with the Cook County Assessor's Office shifting the property tax burden from commercial to residential, is among the main reasons for increasing the tax base, Kendall said.

The EAV for the district had increased every year since 2003.
