D146 Staffers Lace Up, Step Out for Walk to School Day

District 146 faculty and administrators took the scenic route to work, hoofing it to schools as part of this international event. Check out Patch's photos from the day.

Teachers and administrators from schools in Community Consolidated School District 146 put on comfortable kicks and started Wednesday off on foot, to take part in International Walk to School Day.

A group of D146 staffers set out on foot to reach their daily work destinations. Administration started as early as 7 a.m., and hoofed it 1.5 miles from Central Middle School to the administration building.

Staffers also walked to Fulton Elementary School and Kruse Education Center. Other district employees walked their ways around forest preserves.

This is the third year that D146 has participated in the event, which helps promote healthy behavior and physical activity among staffers and students. The day is just one part of the district's Gets Fit program. The goal is to train kids and adults to make healthy choices in their lives when it comes to eating and exercise. The district's wellness committee program has modified the lunch program, created a pedometer walking initiative for teachers and increased PE and recess times.

District staff found Wednesday's morning walk refreshing.
