D228 Board of Education OKs $1.25M in Spending

The Bremen High School District 228 Board of Education approved a two-year busing contract renewal and capital needs funding at its Feb. 19 meeting.

District 228 board members doled out and earmarked a pretty penny on the future of the district at its Feb. 19 meeting. The board first approved a two-year contract extension with Illinois School Bus and Alpha School Bus, before approving 2014 capital needs funding in the amount of $1.25 million.

Both moves were approved in a 5-to-0 vote, with board president Deb Stearns and board member Marc Turner absent from the meeting.

Assistant Superintendent of Finance Tom O'Malley negotiated the busing contracts, said board member Evelyn Gleason. The contracts call for a 1.7 percent increase in cost for the 2013–14 school year and the lesser of the CPI, or 2.5 percent, for the 2014–15 school year.

“These are great renewal costs, so the [finance] committee and the superintendent both recommend these moves to the board,” Gleason said.

The board also approved spending approximately $1.25 million for capital needs for the four buildings in the district. The price is approximately $280,000 less than what was budgeted for the 2012–13 school year, O'Malley said.

When it comes to contract negotiations of any kind, are these meetings posted publicly prior to the meeting and are the meetings open to the public? If not (on either), why not? SD 228 is a taxpayer funded institution, should it not fall under the Open Meetings Act?

Roxanne, just so you know that the admin and Board of Education of the prized School District 228 don't need or want community input... They are the smartest human beings on the south side.... There is anything that anyone could add that hasn't already been created by Kendall and his cronies-the 2013 version of "Dumb & Dumber" Just ask anyone conencted to 228- the district office does a great job of patting themselves on the back for a job well done- they just don't belive that anyone else should get the same acolades. That's whythey received raises and everyone received NOTHING! I hear they have a new motto at 228-you are repalceable- you are a widget in a set of widgets that can be easily transformed to whatever is needed...They don't care about the people- No one except District Admin matters. What happened to employee of the month on the web site for each building? Kendall likes to say he ahs the pulse of the school- he thinks his once a year tour through the buildings talking with the worst 25 performing students is helpful. This so-called outreach to students is a way for Kendall to be in the limelight, to be looked at as if he actually understood why children fail- but more so it is used for him to let Principals know how bad our schoosl are perfroming. It isn't the kids fault- it's us- well actually its everyone by District Admin. www.bhsd228.com take a look at what admin from central office get paid.........
