Lewis University to host "Road to Jericho" Teach-In Oct. 18-20

Lewis University will host a Teach-In entitled "The Road to Jericho: Ethical Challenges in Intervention, Aid and Development" from Oct. 18-20. Consisting of 11 different events, the Teach-In is free of charge and open to the public. All of the events will take place in the Sancta Alberta Chapel located on the university's main campus in Romeoville.

The title calls on the Good Samaritan parable's question of "Who is my neighbour?" It questions whether any form of intervention can be motivated. It also gestures towards Martin Luther King's observation that the road to Jericho needs to be transformed "so that men and women will not be beaten and robbed as they make their journey through life."

At noon on Oct. 18, Dr. Alba M. Hesselroth, assistant professor of political science/public administration at Lewis University, will discuss ethical issues related to United States economic and foreign drug policy towards Latin America, emphasizing the need to promote aid and development instead of militarization. Dr. Ruth Osuch, associate professor of social work at Lewis University, will present "Catholic Social Teaching and Social Work" at 1 p.m. followed by "The Iraqi Student Project" at 2 p.m. where representatives of Lewis University's support group for the project will discuss their involvement in assisting an Iraqi student in obtaining education at the Illinois-based university.

At 2 p.m., community members involved with efforts to aid Haitian neighbours will share news of progress and explain what still needs to be done.

At noon, "Solidarity with Freedom Struggles" will take place followed by the final event at 2 p.m., "Ethical Challenges in Dealing with PIGS" where George Klemic, professor of Business Administration and Dr. Bill Marker, associate professor of Economics, will address the need to reign-in the European Union public treatment of Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain over their fiscal problem, and address the ethical and economic issues related to the problem and potential solutions, particularly in Greece.
