Grissom Community Runs in Memory of Beloved PE Teacher

Grissom P.E. teacher Bob Heenan died this week, and his students gathered to pay tribute.

Members of the Grissom School community Wednesday honored their beloved teacher who died this week.

Bob Heenan was a longtime P.E. teacher at Kirby District 140 junior high school, and his school community ran in his honor during a special memorial run. Heenan also coached cross country.

"This profound loss has so many students shaken," one parent wrote in an email.

The students gathered to run their two-mile course at Turtlehead.

"They hugged, cried and told stories of this incredible man that inspired so many of them to run."

Heenan was a proud graduate of Brother Rice, Northern Illinois University and the University of Oregon. He had "many lifelong friends that will miss his Irish humor and friendship," according to his obituary.

Visitation Sunday, July 27 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday, July 28 from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Heartland Memorial Center, 7151 W. 183rd Street, Tinley Park. See the full obituary online.
