LWHS D210 Enters World of Social Media

The face of Lincoln-Way High School District 210 has started a Facebook page for its supporters.

The face of Lincoln-Way High School District 210 is moving into the realm of social media. The website now features a link to Facebook.

Community Relations Director Stacy Holland at the regular board of education meeting Wednesday announced that the district can post a variety of updates and and photos on the Facebook page, as another way to get out information on what's happening in the district.

While crediting Assistant Communications Director Charla Brautigam for shaping the Facebook page, Holland made a pitch for "Likes."

Holland also told the board that the monthly e-newsletter, which went out last week, features a video message from Supt. Lawrence Wyllie. The monthly message has traditionally been written as a column.

In other communications news, LW North High School Principal said he and his staff were in the process of "preparing a survey for parents, teachers and student of the district to gather input on our academic program." The (District 210 Advisory Committee) agreed in December that a survey was likely a solid way to collect opinions from a broad base of the population.

In other business, the board heard updates on the bus leasing program. In an effort to keep the 170-bus fleet rolling along, Asst. Supt. of Business Ron Sawin explained that 20 percent of the fleet will be shifted out at the end of the school year. They'll be replaced with brand new 71-passenger buses.

It's a five-year lease program with Midwest Transit in Kankakee, he said. Leasing the buses is a more affordable way to stock the fleet, he said. The five-year lease also takes advantage of the traditional five-year warranty on the vehicles. If anything goes wrong with a vehicle, then it's up to Midwest Transit to fix it, and LWHS D210 is not saddled with costly parts replacement.

On basic maintenance, the district spends about $175,000 a year.

"All of our buses are leased through Midwest Transit. It's the same model bus," he added.

In a related matter, Sawin said the Transportation Department is scheduled to lease six smaller activity buses, which are generally used to transport teams to sporting events or groups  to meetings. At the end of the five-year lease, he suggested that the district purchase the buses for long-term use.

"They have low mileage, about 10,000 miles a year." By the time they're ready for purchase, they'll only have between 40,000 and 50,000 miles on them. It makes them a worthwhile purchase, he added.
