Springfield: School District Consolidation "All But Dead"

Lawmakers in Springfield won't try to push school district consolidation this year, reports Illinois Statehouse News.

The state is not going to force local schools to consolidate this year. But school leaders in Springfield say the recent debate about consolidation and cost cutting has been worthwhile.

Illinois State Superintendent Christopher Koch said Thursday opposition to the idea came from all over — local school officials, lawmakers and voters. Koch offered assurance that forced consolidation is all but dead.

The school consolidation issue received major opposition in the south suburbs, with District 146 in Tinley Park holding .
