Melissa Patino, a 16-year-old junior from Oak Forest, is one of nine finalists from around the country in Lucerne Dairy's eighth annual Art of Dairy contest. She earned her spot with a design she created on this year's contest theme, "ImaginDairy Places!" Melissa titled hers "Dairy Wonderland" and described the design on the official site:

Fall into a waterfall of milk and string cheese rafts as you go on an adventure through an ice cream forest and cheesy mountain.

And as part of the contest, she's taken that design and transferred it to an unusual canvas: a life-size cow sculpture.

As the finalist in her region, Melissa received $275 for art supplies to paint her cow and will win at least a $500 gift card. But she could win as much as $5,000—and earn Tinley Park High School's art department $20,000—if she captures the grand prize.

The only way that will happen, though, is if she gets enough votes from the public. Voting for the contest begins at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, and runs until May 17. Go to the contest's website (www.artofdairy.com) to cast your vote.

Votes will determine one winner for grand prize, first place and honorable achievement. Winners will be announced June 6.

Lucerne Dairy is owned by Safeway Inc., which is the parent company of the Chicago-area grocery-store chain Dominick's.

YOUR TURN: Casting a vote isn't the only way you can help Melissa win. Spread the word by sharing this story on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. Plus, wish Melissa luck in this article's comments section.
