Baseball: Andrew Thunders Past Tinley for Zabrocki Cup

Andrew 13, Tinley Park 3. T-Bolts' offense gets going right from the start, and the host Titans are defenseless to stop their crosstown rival.

Touching All the Bases: Nick DeBenedetti’s leadoff double for Andrew seemed to set the tone early in Friday night’s game. The Thunderbolts took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added four more runs in the second, thanks in large part to a two-run double by Brian Cobb.

But the host Titans got back within striking distance in the bottom of the second. Three consecutive one-out hits and Adam Gunther’s RBI saw them put two runs on the board.

After a scoreless third inning, Andrew’s Pat Elget hit a blooping RBI single in the fourth to give the Thunderbolts a 6-2 lead. And then in the fifth, the T-Bolts blew the doors off. Andrew consistently put the ball in play and capitalized on poor Tinley Park fielding to score five runs in the inning.

The Titans added a run in the bottom of the inning, but the damage was done, with the T-Bolts holding an 11-3 lead after five and adding two more runs in the sixth to cruise to a 13-3 victory and possession of the Zabrocki Cup.

Patch’s MVP: Andrew right fielder Brian Cobb hit the ball to all fields, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. His double in the second inning scored two and gave the T-Bolts a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Andrew’s Leaders: In addition to Cobb: junior pitcher Pat McKeown (2 earned runs, 4 hits allowed), catcher Greg Bothwell (1-for-2, RBI double, two runs, two walks).

Tinley Park’s Leaders: Pitcher Andrew Sebastian (1-for-2, single, two walks), Kyle Sheridan (1-for-2, RBI single).

Quotable: Tinley Park coach Brian Gibbons on his team’s fielding woes: “You’ve got to give them credit for putting the ball in play, but we kicked the ball around and made too many mistakes in the field.  You just can’t do that against a good team like Andrew.”

Team Records: Both the T-Bolts and Titans sit at 16-7.

What’s Next: The Thunderbolts play Oak Lawn this morning. The Titans play Lemont on Monday and Tuesday.
