Boys Basketball: Lockport Ends Andrew's Season

Lockport 60, Andrew 47. Teams combine for 46 fouls and 64 free throws in Friday's Stagg Regional championship game, and Thunderbolts fall despite a huge effort from Jubril Adekoya.

The Hot Read: Andrew fell behind 15-8 early in the second quarter and would never get any closer to Lockport. The Porters led 42-28 heading into the final quarter. The Thunderbolts closed to within 44-37 midway through the quarter, but that was as interesting as they'd be able to make Stagg Regional title contest. The Thunderbolts were looking to improve to 4-0 on the season at Stagg, but fell short in the final game for seniors Jabbar Adekoya, Brandon Marren, Colin Kozar and Chris Henaghan.

Patch's MVP: Andrew sophomore Jubril Adekoya wanted to extend his brother Jabbar's high school basketball career for at least one more game. Jubril Adekoya scored a game-high 23 points and collected a game-best 17 rebounds. The Thunderbolts had 33 rebounds as a team, so Jubril Adekoya had more than half of his team’s total.

Key Stats: The teams’ combined 46 fouls and 64 free throws are eye-glaring stats, but they evened out. Both teams committed 23 fouls apiece and their efforts from the free-throw line were nearly identical as Lockport shot 21-of-31 and Andrew 20-of-33.

Andrew's Leaders: No one was even in the same gym as Jabril Adekoya, but the Thunderbolts did receive big contributions from Glorind Lisha (10 points), Jawad Adekoya (7 points) and Jabbar Adekoya (5 rebounds).

Lockport's Leaders: Kyle Ward (15 points), Karrington Ward (13 points, 7 rebounds) and Richsun Holmes (7 points, 6 rebounds).

Quotable: Andrew's Jubril Adekoya on the loss: "Credit to them. They are a very good team, but I felt we could've played with them and could've beat them, but it just wasn't our night.”

Quotable II: Lockport coach Lawrence Thompson Jr., on trying to get into a rhythm offensively: "We finally went through a good period where we were reversing the ball and giving Kyle Ward a chance to get to the basket, which was good."

Quotable III: Andrew coach Mike O'Halloran on the difficulty of rallying in a foul-filled affair: "We'd make a basket, pick up a foul and then they'd shoot free throws. It was ‘Here we go again.’ "

Team Records: Andrew: 16-11; Lockport: 21-8.

What's Next: Andrew's season is complete. Lockport will play Thornton on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Thornwood Sectional.
