Football: Lemont Takes Down Tinley Park in Battle of Unbeatens

Lemont 49, Tinley Park 20: Indians used a pounding ground attack and some well-timed passes to roll past the Titans.

Breaking It Down: In a battle of unbeaten teams in the South Suburban Blue Conference, the host Indians served notice that the road to the conference championship will go through Lemont, thanks to their 49-20 victory over on Friday night.

Lemont jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first two touchdowns of the game while making Tinley Park’s vaunted offense stall for three-and-outs on the Titans’ first two possessions. But quarterback Kyle Sheridan and the Tinley offense clicked on the Titans’ third time behind the wheel, pulling to within one touchdown on an 11-yard TD grab by Tracey Brandy.

Lemont answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Damon Aleman to wideout Tyler Jay. The teams then traded touchdowns for a 28-13 Lemont lead at the half.

The Titans received the ball after intermission, and running back Gregory Wallace made it a 28-20 game by racing 69 yards for a score. But Lemont never took its foot off the pedal. The Indians continued to pound the ball on the ground, and they went up 35-20 after a 20-yard touchdown reception by Eric Kirkman.

The Tinley Park offense again marched down the field, but a red-zone fumble seemed to take all the wind from the Titans’ sails. Lemont drove 90 yards for a touchdown after the fumble to ice the game.

Patch’s MVP: Lemont running back Christos Giatras ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Giatras added two receptions for another 72 yards off play-action passes.

Lemont Stat Pack: Quarterback Damon Aleman went 9-for-12 for 184 yards and three touchdowns. His main target was wide receiver Tyler Jay (5 receptions, 92 yards, 2 touchdowns). Jay consistently beat the Titans secondary and posted all of his receptions in the first half.

Tinley Park Stat Pack: RB Gregory Wallace (16 carries, 150 yards, 2 touchdowns) provided some big plays for the Titans offense. QB Kyle Sheridan (10-for-19 for 165 yards, 1 touchdown) spread the ball to four different receivers and hit five passes for at least 25 yards.

Quotable I: Lemont head coach Eric Michaelsen on wrinkles to the offense: “Every year Tinley does a nice job of scheming against our offense. We had some things we thought we might have run, and that included the play-action type plays from our offense.”

Quotable II: Tinley Park head coach Nick Johnston: “We talked about not giving up big plays and making Lemont earn it, but when we needed a stop, we didn’t get it.”

Team Records: Lemont is 5-0, 2-0 in the South Suburban Blue Conference. Tinley Park falls to 4-1 overall, 1-1 in conference play.

What’s Next:  Both teams play next Friday, Sept. 30.  Lemont goes on the road to face Bremen in Midlothian. Tinley Park travels to district rival Hillcrest.
