Football: Turnovers Plague Rich Central in Loss to Robeson

Robeson 28, Rich Central 14: Two third-quarter miscues enabled the Raiders to take control in the second half against the Olympians.

Breaking It Down: In Rich Central's 28-14 loss to Robeson on Friday night, the story was one of big plays in the first half. Both teams hit home runs and went to the lockerroom at halftime tied 8-8.

Then, a fumble by Rich Central running back James Thigpen on the first play of the second half gave Robeson the ball at midfield. The Raiders ran the ball 10 times in a row and scored on a 1-yard plunge by Devon Sanders. A two-point conversion made the score 16-8.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Olympians were unable to field the ball cleanly and the Raiders recovered. Robeson marched down the field and scored a touchdown on its only pass completion of the game, a 10-yarder, to stretch its lead to 22-8.

The Olympians could do little on offense. The Raiders took over and scored early in the fourth quarter to build a 28-8 cushion. Rich Central quarterback Devonte Black had a 40-yard run for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring at 28-14.

In the first half, the Raiders got on the board first as Sanders scored on an 80-yard touchdown run. The Olympians tied the game when Black hooked up with Shawn Mitchell Jr. for an 88-yard touchdown.  Both teams converted on their two-point coversions.

Patch’s MVP: Devon Sanders, Robeson. He rushed 21 times for 209 yards, highlighted by an 80-yard touchdown run in the first half.
