Girls Volleyball: Andrew Strikes a Melody in Win Over Joliet Central

After singing the national anthem, the T-Bolts showed their game was as well-tuned as their vocal chords in a 25-14, 25-22 victory over Joliet Central.

The Andrew girls volleyball team received solid contributions from up-and-down its lineup in a 25-14, 25-22 victory over Joliet Central on Tuesday night in Tinley Park.

But the match wasn’t the team's only chance to show off its depth.

Due to audio difficulties before the game, Andrew and Joliet Central stood on the the court waiting for a national anthem that never came.  After a few glances around, the T-Bolt girls led the gymnasium in their own rendition of the Star Spangled Banner that was well received by the home crowd.

Luckily for the team, Andrew's game was as well-tuned as its collective singing voice. The T-Bolts jumped to an 11-3 lead in the first game after a block by sophomore middle hitter Baylee Panfil.

“Everybody went in and got a chance to contribute; they all played very well," Andrew coach Courtney Stoub said. "It was a good win and very fun to see everyone chip in.”

With Andrew (9-4) again taking an early lead and looking in control, the second game was shaping up to be much like the first. T-Bolt setter Angela Robison (10 assists) set up a variety of Andrew hitters, and Jackie Radzikowski continued to serve well for her team.

Yet, despite being down 19-13, Joliet Central (11-4) fought back and tied the game 19-19 after six consecutive service points from T’ara Austin (4 blocks).

The T-Bolt’s Maureen Carls, who continues to lead her team in overall play, put an end to the run when she crushed one of her four kills to put Andrew up for good 20-19. She also chipped in four digs and two blocks.

“The girls are giving a great effort and getting better,” Stoub said.  “From a coaching standpoint, I still see a lot of growth and know that we can get better.”
