Softball: Christner, Andrew Surge Past H-F

Andrew 6, Homewood Flossmoor 3. T-Bolts used a four-run sixth inning to get the job done in Class 4A sectional semifinal at Lockport.

Touching All the Bases: Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Andrew center fielder Kelly Christner helped spark the T-Bolt offense to life. Andrew scored four runs and went on to defeat Homewood-Flossmoor 6-3 in a semifinal matchup at the Class 4A Lockport Sectional.

Andrew third baseman Shannon Rust led off the comeback inning. She reached first after being hit by a pitch and was sent to second on a sacrifice bunt from Dani Bestwina. Christner stepped up next and put her final stamp on the game. She was 3-for-3 heading into her final at-bat, and she was not about to be denied with her team down in the sixth inning.

Christner singled again, driving in Rust for the tying run, but she didn’t stop there. Christner went from first to third after an error by the H-F defense. She was driven home with what proved to be the game-winning run by the next batter, second baseman Jenna Lenza.

H-F put runs on the board in the second and third innings. The Vikings started both innings with leadoff doubles from the middle of their lineup.  Adrienne Contreras led off the second with a stand-up double to left. She was driven home by pitcher Sarah Burke. Kaitlyn Shereyk led off the third with a double of her own. She dropped a blooper over the shortstop's head and employed aggressive base-running to land on second. Shereyk scored two batters later to put the Vikings up 3-2. The lead just was not enough.

After giving up two runs to the Vikings in the third inning, T-Bolt pitcher Brooke Hofer went on a tear. She allowed only one Viking batter to reach base the rest of the game to earn the hard-fought victory.

Patch’s MVP: Andrew center fielder Kelly Christner came up with a game-tying RBI hit in the sixth inning and scored the game-winning run two batters later.  She finished 4-for-4 from the plate.

Andrew Leaders: Second baseman Jenna Lenza (2-for-3, 2 RBIs, 2 runs); pitcher Brooke Hofer (7 innings, 6 strikeouts, 2 earned runs).

H-F Leaders: First baseman Carli Kavanagh (1-for-3, RBI single); pitcher Sarah Burke (4 earned runs over 7 innings, 3 strikeouts).

Quotable: Andrew’s Kelly Christner on her big day at the plate: “I was just going out there and staying aggressive, seeing pitches I liked with the count in my favor and aiming for base hits.”

Team Records: Andrew is 28-9.  H-F ends its season at 19-15.

What’s Next: Andrew will play Sandburg at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the Lockport Sectional title.
