Girls Volleyball: Andrew's Carls Spikes H-F

Andrew 25-25, Homewood-Flossmoor 22-12: Senior outside hitter Maureen Carls puts on a show as T-Bolts notch straight-sets victory.

What started out as a back-and-forth girls volleyball match between Andrew and Homewood-Flossmoor quickly turned into a rout. The teams traded first game blows until Andrew’s Maureen Carls swung the momentum the T-Bolts' way with her robust hitting.

Andrew went on to notch a straight-sets victory (25-22, 25-12).

Down 19-16 in Game 1, the T-Bolts' Carls delivered three kills and an array of nasty serves to help Andrew rally in Game 1.

“We were in it, but Carls got on a run with her jump serve, and we just couldn’t stop her,” Homewood-Flossmoor coach Tony Kruse said.  “It was a good position for them to be in at the end of the game with their big server closing it out.”

The T-Bolts kept the momentum going in Game 2, immediately jumping out to a 5-1 lead. H-F’s outside hitter Kaitlyn Shereyk (9 kills, 10 digs) and libero Emily Shroeder did their best to keep the Vikings in the game, but they couldn’t mount a run as Andrew finished off the sweep.

The T-Bolts received solid contributions from Elizabeth Jendra (3 kills, 7 digs) and Kelsey Lafin (2 kills, 2 blocks), but it was Carls who stole the show. She finished with eight assists, five blocks, three aces and 11 digs for the T-Bolts.

After the match, Andrew coach Courtney Stoub beamed over Carls play.

“Carls is a natural volleyball player," Stoub said. "She just explodes on the court and has a very dynamic hit along with her jump (serve). She is just a great overall player for us.”

With the win, Andrew is off to a 6-1 start after placing fifth in the 16-team Wheaton North Invitationa. H-F drops to 1-1 after earlier defeating Tinley Park in its opener.

“I’m excited about our start,” Stoub said.  “The girls are working hard in practice, and it’s rolling over in the games for us.”
