Local Cake Artist Takes Talent to Vegas Competition

Local cake artist Ashley Spitzer will show off her skills with sweets Oct. 6–9, at the International Baking Industry Exposition in Las Vegas.  She will create 11 cakes and a set of 12 cupcakes for judging. Cheer her on and follow her showing on Creative Cakes Facebook page.

TUESDAY, OCT. 8
Free Eye Exams for Students:
Orland Township and Eye Specialists Center, 600 Ravinia Place, will host a free vision clinic for Orland Township students still in need of a state-required eye examination by the October 15 deadline. Proof of residency and an appointment is required. Find out more details

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 9
International Walk to School Day: International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. Keep an eye on Patch for how local schools are participating. 

$20 Flu Shots: To prevent the spread of the flu virus within the community, Orland Township is offering flu shots to residents from Sept. 23 through Oct 28. Vaccines for residents between 19 and 65 are available for $20. Children under 18 receive the shot for free. Proof of residency is required. Find out more details

SATURDAY, OCT. 12
Cold-blooded Critters Invade Tinley: Cold-blooded creatures return to Tinley Oct. 12, with the North American Reptile Breeders Conference and Trade Show. Open to the public, this high quality, captive-bred-only reptile show brings together top dealers from across the country offering thousands of exotic and pet-friendly “herps.” Don’t miss this opportunity to get up-close and personal with snakes, frogs, turtles, geckos, iguanas, and tortoises! Find out more details. 

'Creep Out' Cancer at Costume Bowling Bash: The Cancer Support Center invites residents to Tinley Bowl Saturday, Oct. 12, for a night of scares, spares and strikes. The fun starts at 8 p.m. and ends at midnight. Tickets are $30, and include pizza, pop, bowling and a candy dash. Find out more details

Park District's Fall Arts and Craft Fair: Welcome the fall with new crafts for your home. The fair will highlight many of the talented crafters in the community. Exhibits are open to the public at no charge. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Recreation Center. 

All month: Jean Therapy in Orland Park is holding a month-long jean drive to help stock Neat Repeats, the resale store operated by the Crisis Center of South Suburbia. People who bring in a pair of jeans to the store throughout October will get $15 off a purchase, and the jeans will all be donated to the Crisis Center of South Suburbia. The non-profit supporting battered women and families in need runs the Neat Repeats resale store, where the donated jeans will be sold.
