Workers are expected to soon start the replacement process of a half-mile long sanitary main that runs beneath 171st Street and 80th Avenue. Find out how it will affect your day-to-day life and driving in Tinley Park.
Work will soon begin on a deteriorating sanitary main that runs beneath 171st Street in Tinley Park. And although detours won't be necessary on major thoroughfares during the several month-long process, drivers should expect lane closures, said Village of Tinley Park Interim Water Superintendent Joe Wywrot. Bikers should also be mindful, as access to a nearby bicycle trail will be affected. Work on the project, which is costing the village about $1.5 million, is expected to begin Aug. 13. Sign up to receive a free, daily e-newsletter from Tinley Park Patch. "The existing pipe is deteriorated; we've had a few breaks on that line," Wywrot said. "The thing is is that waste water is pretty corrosive to iron, to steel. Its time has come. We're…

Village officials are narrowing the search for a vendor at the 80th Avenue Metra Station. A business owner presented her proposal before two committees Tuesday, saying she wants to make the stop a destination, rather than a mere commuter checkpoint.
After several months of extended application deadlines and back-and-forth discussions with potential restauranteurs, village officials may be zeroing in on their choice for a vendor at the already-opened 80th Avenue Metra Station. Nicole Betourney, owner and executive chef for Palos Heights-based business, Isn't That Sweet, presented her plan for the space Tuesday night during a joint meeting of the Village of Tinley Park's Budget, Audit and Administration, and the Finance and Economic Development committees. Sign up for a free daily e-newsletter from Tinley Park Patch. The station's building is fully functional but has lacked a vendor since the end of its first construction phase in March. The 5,600-square-foot structure replaced a tiny 1…

A handful of patients and the remaining staff members at the Tinley Park Mental Health Center have mostly left the soon-to-be shuttered facility. The 275-acre land will officially be barren by the week's end.

As the doors of the Tinley Park Mental Health Center are shuttered this week, some are wondering where they, and others, will turn for help. The Chicago Tribune reported that one woman who received paranoid schizophrenia treatment at the facility for a six-month period is worried about where south suburban residents are going to find the help they need. "I'm heartbroken, and I'm really kind of angry about the whole situation because I feel if something happens to me, I won't have that support system anymore," Lisa Guardiola, 41, of Hazel Crest told reporter Ashley Reuff. "I don't really know what's going to happen." Gov. Pat Quinn has said he prefers to shift those seeking care away from state-run facilities and into more community focused…

Village Mayor Ed Zabrocki weighed the positives and negatives Tuesday to considering a 275-acre plot of land where the Tinley Park Mental Health Center now sits. He said developers' interest has declined and he called it an "environmental nightmare."
Local officials said Tuesday that the last client at the Tinley Park Mental Health Center should be filing out the doors by July 1. That means the once sought-after land will soon be up for grabs, potentially finding its way in front of the village board for local purchase. But Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki noted during a joint meeting of the Village Board and park district Tuesday that developers may not want the land as much as they previously did. The facility had been under fire for several years before finally getting its fate handed down last week when a Cook County judge denied a motion that could have delayed its closure. The 275-acre land will be offered to other state agencies for a period of 60 days prior to coming before the …

Village officials heard from those on both sides of the video gaming debate earlier this week before coming to vote on the matter.
Village of Tinley Park trustees heard from both sides of the local gambling debate this week before making their final call on the matter—one they have already supported for more than half a century. The board unanimously favored a motion Tuesday that will keep video poker machines out of town. They have been outlawed locally since the 1960s, according to village documents. The move adds Tinley to the growing list of about 300 Illinois municipalities that have already opted out of the state's Video Gaming Act. "The state's new legislation may supersede our existing ordinances," Brian Maher, chair of the village's Public Safety Committee, said at a May meeting. "We're suggesting passing this in order to maintain our longstanding stance …

Trustees gave the go-ahead Tuesday to the first reading of a motion that if given final approval later this month, will further restrict parking on Oak Park Avenue once a week.
Officials took the next step Tuesday night to further restrict traffic on Oak Park Avenue during this summer's Cruise Nights. They've said the measure—it prevents parking on not one, but both sides of the street—should help make downtown Tinley Park a bit more organized during the weekly event. Trustees approved the motion's first reading Tuesday. If given the final go-ahead at the next village board meeting, restrictions will not be in place by June 5, which is this year's first scheduled Cruise Night, officials said. "It works out for the best because it will give the police department time to prepare," said Village of Tinley Park Trustee Brian Maher, chair of the Public Safety Committee. The classic car shows kicked off last year and …

Officials gave their stamp of approval Tuesday night to next fiscal year's budget, which includes new police and public works vehicles, water main repairs, and more.
The Village of Tinley Park operating budget for Fiscal Year 2013 comes with an anticipated $41.2 million price tag—an expense that was given the go-ahead Tuesday with a 5-0 vote by the Village Board. Trustees approved the general fund budget at their regular board meeting. Patricia Leoni was absent. The vote came one week after a public hearing on the issue—at which no one spoke, officials said—and more than 10 days after the budget was put on public display for residents. The total cost is up about 1 percent from the 2012 budget, which was slightly less than $41 million, according to board documents. "It's a good position to be in and (budget planning) has been done with a lot of hard work on the part of everyone," said David Seaman, a …

The village's board of trustees approved a repaving project this week that includes 63 local residential roads.
A total of 63 streets making up more than 11 miles of road in Tinley Park will be getting a facelift come late April and early May. Village officials approved a $2.5 million contract with representatives from Iroquois Paving Corporation this past week, who will work this spring to put a fresh coat of pavement on local streets, according to a story in Triblocal. The projects are being paid for using revenue from motor fuel tax and vehicle stickers, village documents said. “Residents will still have access to their driveways,” Village Manager Scott Niehaus said, according to the story. “The process (on each street) is fast and should only take a couple of days.” Also at the March 20 meeting, the village accepted Local Agency Pavement …

The current owner of the 191st Street shopping center is hoping to close its sale of the property within the next 60 days. Representatives for the new potential owners are already talking about new additions to the strip mall.
More stores could be coming to 191st Street's Brookside Marketplace in as soon as about two months, when the current shopping center's owner is expected to sell it to another corporation. The move includes property owner Ryan Companies U.S. Inc. selling the center to the Ohio-based business, DDR Corp. The sale should be a done deal within 60 days, representatives said. Village Board Trustee Dave Seaman said Tuesday that he supports the move. "It's kind of a natural next step in the evolution of these organizations," he said during the board's regular meeting. Seaman is also the chair of the village's Finance and Economic Development Committee. He noted that the corporation, formerly known as Developers Diversified Realty, is among the …

Village trustees adopted a set of rules that will help maintain financial responsibility and create more transparency, they said.
At times, village officials' crucial decisions are all about the money. And those on the Village of Tinley Park Board of Trustees said this week that they want those choices—most often made on behalf of residents—to be the right ones. The group unanimously approved adopting a fiscal policies manual Tuesday at its regular meeting. The guidelines are not only meant to help maintain financial integrity, but honor a suggestion from Standard & Poor's, the village's bond rating agency, according to board documents. “It’s important for us to have this all in one place,” Mayor Ed Zabrocki said, of compiling the guidelines. The manual includes village ordinances that relate to financial decisions—such as setting a tax levy—as well as information on…

Gail is absolutely right. A local sit-down/meeting place to conduct business or simply to socialize and enjoy a coffee and higher-end pastry would be a great thing for the area. Anyone who wants to go to Dunkin or McD's can. For me, I'd actually like something a little more substantial than a drive-thru...I like to get out of my car once and a while and be able to enjoy something other than mass-…   more ›
