Near-Capacity Cook County Jail Bleeds Budget

County President Toni Preckwinkle is asking 1,500 inmates be transferred to home-monitoring, to prevent an overcrowding crisis, ABC7 reports.

Cook County Jail is nearly full to bursting. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is asking the detention center to reduce its 10,000+ population by 1,500 because there is not enough money to pay for them, ABC7 reports. At its current rate of admissions, the prison is poised to exceed its 10,150-prisoner capacity "within days." "The population I had today is what I'd normally have at the worst time of the year," Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart told ABC7. "You can't sustain that. My overtime budget is exploding right now, absolutely exploding. I'm already close to going through what I was supposed to do for the whole year." To prevent overcrowding, Preckwinkle proposes that by mid-summer, 1,500 prisoners be transferred to home …

District 230 Passes Balanced FY2012 Budget; Includes Salary and Benefit Boosts

A salary increase is in the works for teachers in some local schools next fiscal year.

Unlike many Illinois school districts, Consolidated High School District 230 is beginning its 2012 Fiscal Year "in the black." The district's board passed that $121 million budget Thursday night during its regular meeting at Victor J. Andrew High School. Assistant Superintendent for Business Steve Langert, who presented it, pointed out that the combined operating funds and working cash funds of $52.3 million make up 44 percent of the budgeted operating expenses for FY2012. With Cook County tax bills likely being collected a month earlier this year, he doesn't anticipate any cash flow issues, he said. The district’s operating revenue is expected to increase 1.1 percent from last year, nearly matching the projected expenses for this year. …

Balanced Budget? In a no growth economy, with no inflation and reduced enrollments, we "give" a 3% raise and 7% increase in benefits to an already over compensated, bloated, special interest group. Education isn't about learning, it's about wealth redistribution, job creation and political patronage. Why do only 35% of college students graduate in 4 years and less that 59% in 6 years? Rewarding …   more ›

SD161 Approves Fence Work on Summit Hill Junior High Ball Fields

Citing safety issues, members accepted a bid that would create a canopy over the backstop on two of the junior high's baseball fields.

Members of Summit Hill School Board District 161 approved a bid Wednesday to improve fencing to Summit Hill Junior High School's baseball fields but delayed work on the fields' dugouts and electrical systems. The boad accepted a bid for about $27,000 from Do All Fence Co. that would create a new canopy over the backstop of the fields to protect people from foul balls. However, a bid of about $52,000 from another firm to make improvements on the dugouts was rejected. Board members agreed that addressing the safety of fans and players was paramount and that work on the dugouts could wait. "I'm very reluctant to spend $52,000 on dugouts at this time," said Board President Mary Kenny.  Board member Denise Lenz echoed that sentiment, saying the…

A Budget Story in English? Tinley Park's 2012 Numbers Broken Down: The Gist

It's oh-so boring but oh-so important. The Gist makes the nuts and bolts of government palatable.

In an eight-hour meeting on Thursday, the Tinley Park Village Board went through the entire proposed 2012 budget, going line-by-line in spots to question every place a department, official or commission asked for cash. I have lived in aTTInley for forty years. It's run pretty well as far as I'm concerned. Sorry there will be some budget cuts, but I don't know anyone who hasn't given something up in this bad economy. I enjoy the bands downtown in the summer, the Irish pararde and the caribbean block party. I do my very best to shop in Tinley and keep my spending at local merchants. It's a very good place to live.   more ›
