We've plotted for you the local vehicle break-ins and damage that was reported in the month of July. A night of vandalism spiked the number of incidents last month.
Between July 1 and 31, a total of 53 cases of burglary and/or damage to vehicles were reported to Tinley Park police. A total of 35 of those instances were exclusively damage while the remaining 18 included thefts, and sometimes damage. The latter statistic is inflated because of an evening of vandalism July 7 in Tinley Park that spanned four streets—167th Place, Grissom Drive, and 82nd and 80th avenues—and left 27 vehicles heavily damaged. Those collective incidents are represented on the map with the exclamation point icon. In a particularly odd break-in dated July 16, a Metra conductor had his uniform and work equipment stolen. Fitness center parking lots are often targeted because thieves know that when people work out, they don't take their valuables with them, Tinley Park Police Cmndr. Steve Vaccaro has said. Tinley Park police went to the Oak Park Avenue Metra station around 12:30 a.m. Friday after getting a call reporting that three men were using flashlights to look into parked vehicles there. Walking southbound on Oak Park Avenue near Hickory Street, police found Malik R. Reese, 18, of the 14700 block of Central Park in Midlothian, Amonte C. Taylor, 18, same address, as well as a 15-year-old juvenile. After running information for the three through their system, police found that Reese was wanted on a warrant for criminal trespassing to a vehicle out of Midlothian. He was also found in possession of a 1998 BMW that Midlothian police reported was stolen June 16 from a car dealership. The juvenile in the group was cited for violating the …
