Plan for Healthier Village Vending Machine Food Put on Hold

The Tinley Park Village Board tabled a resolution that would have stocked village vending machines with fruits and other healthy snacks. The problem: The current machines can't handle some of the more nutritious food.

Village Appoints Committee to Make You Healthier

The Village of Tinley Park Board of Trustees appointed 10 people to a wellness committee Tuesday.

Mayor Ed Zabrocki insisted Tuesday that a 10-person committee created to make Tinley Park healthier isn't going to force residents to eat broccoli. "Our goal is not to make everyone eat spinach … or whatever else," he said at Tuesday's village board meeting. " … We're not going to eliminate fast food. Our goal is to establish a healthy way of living." Representatives from local school districts, the library, businesses and the park district were appointed to the Mayor's Advisory Panel on Wellness — a short-term committee tasked with devising a local health plan. Firm to Help Boost Tinley Residents' Health and Wellness

The Tinley Park Village Board approved a contract Tuesday for a group that will guide a local effort to improve health.

Village trustees officially appointed a firm Tuesday that will be tasked with creating a community wellness plan. The $40,000 contract with the Chicago-based MSC Consulting will be funded with help from a $116,000 grant from the Model Communities Program. The village received that money in January, according to board documents. The plan will encompass local schools, the park district, library and health organizations, said Trustee Greg Hannon, chairman of the Village Board’s Planning and Zoning Committee.
