Village Videos: Time Travel to Easter 1982 in Tinley Park

Patch spotlights videos that give you a different look at the community, past and present. This week, we take a look at a piece of history as a family celebrates Easter more than 30 years ago.

Village Videos features videos from Patch, from around the web and from readers that showcase Tinley Park and its residents. Want your video featured? Upload it to our Neighborhood Gallery and email me at joev@patch.com to say you want to see it in Village Videos. One of the fascinating things about YouTube videos are that, on occasion, they can give glimpses of the past in a way that photos and writings can't. That's why this week, thanks to YouTube user Tom Miler, we're using Village Videos as our personal WABAC Machine to look how one family celebrated Easter in 1982. YOUR TURN: Do you have videos of Easters past? Or even footage of family celebrating this year? Share them here by uploading the video to this story's media gallery.   …

Easter Weekend: What's Closed in Tinley Park and Oak Forest?

Find out what municipal offices and services will have their doors closed for the holiday starting Friday.

CORRECTION (9:46 a.m., March 29, 2013): An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the hall was not open for early voting Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30. Although city offices are closed, the hall will be open for early voting on those days. Easter weekend—including Good Friday—means some local civic offices will be shut down for the holidays. Here's a look at what will be closed in Tinley Park and Oak Forest during this time: For those looking to squeezing in a visit to the Easter Bunny and do a pre-Easter, Easter egg hunt, here's an event open to the public before the Sunday holiday: SATURDAY, MARCH 30 Odyssey Fun World takes the egg hunt to new heights with this event, which also includes a cow train, pony rides…

Through it all, There's Still That Pesky Wittle Wabbit

Happy Easter from my family to yours.

I've always wondered how Jesus' resurrection translated to an oversized rabbit handing out candy to children. I mean, I'm not complaining. I think most mascots are hilarious and if they're struttin' around tossing fistfuls of goodies, who's really going to whine about it? Not this girl. That said, as an Orthodox Christian, my Easters were always a little bit different. Sure, we still had hunts, dyed hardboiled eggs, got baskets of candy and wore fancy outfits—mine were always paired with gloves and ruffled socks. But we had a lot of other traditions, too.  I struggled as a child to describe what it means to be Orthodox. No one seemed to understand why unless American and Orthodox Easters aligned, as they did last year, we celebrate our …

How about worst t-shirt? I vote the guy who wore "Guilty of Being White", which gave me the experience of explaining to my son what that meant and why it was stupid. Thanks, White Trash guy. Awesome Easter memory.   more ›

Five Totally Fake and Made-Up Trivia Tidbits About Easter

None of this is true, folks. Enjoy, add your own and have a Happy Easter.

It's Easter, meaning joy, family togetherness, the coming of spring, a return to people completely avoiding Long John Silver's and McDonald's Fillet-O-Fish sandwich and, of course, lists of fake Easter trivia to pad out a slow news day. Now, to the completely fake list: 1. In Delaware, the Easter Egg is called a "Tallahassee Quahog" and an especially strong-smelling one betokens a bountiful harvest. 2. The name "Easter" means "more east." 3. The original Cadbury Bunny was played by a struggling young actor named John Charles Carter or, as you may better know him, Charlton Heston. 4. In medieval times, the Easter dinner at the court of the king was a selection of animals inserted into other animals. It was known as a …
