'It Never Gets Old': Mayor, Trustees Celebrate New Term at Inauguration

For the ninth time, Ed Zabrocki was sworn in as Tinley Park on Tuesday at an inauguration ceremony at Odyssey Country Club.

Mayor Ed Zabrocki has more than a passing familiarity with inauguration ceremonies. Being elected mayor of Tinley Park for nine terms will do that. But that doesn't mean the event has become old hat or that it's something he takes for granted. READ: Zabrocki, Team Tinley Incumbents Stay in Office "It never gets old," Zabrocki said during a post-inaugural reception Tuesday, May 14, at Odyssey Country Club. "Each time, it's new and exciting." Zabrocki was joined by Village Clerk Patrick Rea, trustees Dave Seaman, Brian Maher and T.J. Grady and members of the Tinley Park Public Library Board and the Tinley Park-Park District Commission during Tuesday's ceremony to swear in the recently elected village officials.  The ceremony was conducted by…

Patch spotlights videos that give you a different look at the community, past and present. This week, we take a look at the first graduating class from the Tinley Park Police Department's 12-week citizens academy.

Village Videos features videos from Patch, from around the web and from readers that showcase Tinley Park and its residents. Want your video featured? Upload it to our Neighborhood Gallery and email me at joev@patch.com to say you want to see it in Village Videos. They didn't receive badges, and they can't arrest anyone, but the graduates of the Tinley Park Police Department's first-ever citizens academy do have a better sense of the day-to-day duties of local law enforcement officials. The 12-week program, which began Jan. 17, was an idea Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer brought with him when he was hired in 2011 from his former post in Elmhurst. The purpose of the academy is to pull back the curtain on the police department for …

I'm sorry I can no longer have this debate with you for obvious reasons. At first you came off all intellectual with your quips at this "kid", but then you say your mantra is Ebby Aint it....Ain't is not a word. Please change your mantra so people don't think everyone in Tinley Park speaks this way. Your ruse with your comments about my mom and age are high school at best. I really don't care who…   more ›

Looking For The Truth in Tinley Park

I have to ask this question given the statement from @Former Trustee. Your statement reads " How can it be ok to accept political contributions at city hall? " How would someone at the Village know what is in the envelope handed to them unless it is labeled Campaign Contribution? If someone hands a clerk an envelope and says "please deliver this too (insert name here)." Should that clerk ask what…   more ›

Tinley Park's Term Limits Commission: What You Need to Know

The public body that will give its recommendations on whether the village should have term limits for local elected officials met for the first time last week. Find out what happened and what it means to you.

The first meeting of Tinley Park's newly formed commission to investigate term limits for elected village officials laid the foundation last week for its six-month mission. About 25 people attended this initial Wednesday, March 27, meeting of the commission, which was created as a response to an advisory referendum on the November 2012 ballot. That referendum posed the question: “Shall the Village Board of the Village of Tinley Park pass an Ordinance imposing term limits on all elected officials?” READ: Voters Pass Advisory Referendum on Term Limits for Elected Officials While residents voted yes on the referendum by a 3-to-1 margin, the village board is under no obligation to act on it. But village officials decided to form a commission …

Ok "Ready" what should the Mayor have done given half an idea from Ebby that wasn't a fully formed thought? How much money does the Commission waste? Any idea how much? I don't know and you might know. I think Ebby is just petulant because he has to run against the incumbents instead of them just jumping off the ballot and allowing him to run uncontested. You do realize there has to be a post-…   more ›

'Always Open' Closes for Good: Owner Gives Back Store's Licenses

The owner of Tinley Farmily Food and Liquor relinquished the convenience store's business, liquor and cigarette licenses to the village Monday. This comes less than a month after the store's manager was arrested on felony theft charges.

The owner of a troubled convenience store at the corner of Oak Park Avenue and 183rd Street surrendered his business, liquor and cigarette licenses to the village Monday, almost a month after the shop was cited for numerous violations and the manager was implicated in a fencing ring, according to a village press release. Without those licenses, Tinley Family Food and Liquor, which at various times has gone under the name Always Open and Tinley 24/Seven, can no longer operate in Tinley Park. The store has been closed since late February, and the building, which is not owned by the store owner, is being foreclosed. April's Ballot Takes Shape as Candidates File on First Day

Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki and lawyer Steve Eberhardt both turned in their nominating petitions Monday for the village's mayoral race. Find out who else threw their hats in the ring for other races.

Nine candidates—including five incumbents—filed their nominating petitions for village offices up for election in April, according to the Tinley Park Village Clerk's Office. The village races on the April 9 ballot include those for mayor, clerk and three trustee seats. As expected, Mayor Ed Zabrocki, who is running for his ninth term, will be facing at least one challenger in Tinley Park lawyer Steve Eberhardt, who announced his candidacy in October. Earlier this year, Eberhardt petitioned to have an advisory referendum on village term limits added to the November ballot. Voters passed the non-binding referendum. Both candidates are running as part of larger slates. Zabrocki and the incumbents in the other races are running under the …

Village Board Proposes to Freeze Property Tax Levy

Despite looming financial uncertainties, Tinley Park's board of trustees recommended keeping the 2012 levy at the same level as 2011, with some officials even suggesting a decrease.

When it comes to government bodies, a discussion concerning tax cuts usually comes in response to the idea of tax increases. And vice versa. But that isn't how the Tinley Park Village Board works. Even with major expenditures in the future for Tinley Park, trustees and village officials debated at its Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday, Nov. 27, whether to hold the village's 2012 property tax levy at its current rate—$1.202, with a request of about $19.39 million—or decrease it slightly as a symbolic gesture to homeowners of the village government's financial commitment to frugality. My taxes for a condo in the Pines were over $5600 before the condo board finally hired someone to appeal our taxes. Now they are down to about $4200 which is still ridiculous. Is Tinley's 80th Ave. Station the Taj Mahal for Commuters? (Photos)

That's what Metra's chairman called the newly renovated station during its dedication ceremony Monday. Check out photos from the ribbon-cutting and tell us what you think of the terminal.

As he took the podium at Monday morning's dedication ceremony for the renovated 80th Avenue Metra station, Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki produced a 34-year-old photo given to him by Village Manager Scott Niehaus. It depicted—in all its aged and bleached-out color glory—a single train along a set of tracks and a parking lot, all anchored in a sea of open field and brush. READ: End in Sight for Work at 80th Avenue Metra Station "I remember sitting here as a trustee in 1977, '78, saying, 'My God, what did we build here'," Zabrocki said of the original terminal and its surrounding environs. "In those 34 years we've come a long way," he added. "And this particular area has kind of grown to be the center of our community in many different ways…
