Tinley Park Honors Its Veterans, Then Dedicates Plaza to Rea

This year, the village's Veterans Day ceremony had two goals: Pay tribute to Tinley's military men and women and dedicate its new Veterans Plaza to native son Patrick Rea. It did both, although 4 people fell ill during the event.

Joseph Detratto apologized Sunday for visibly sobbing as he talked about the surprise Christmas gift his daughter and ex-wife had given him: a brick with his name along the "hometown hero walk," part of the new Gen. Patrick Rea Veterans Plaza at the renovated 80th Avenue Metra Station. "It was beyond words," said Detratto, who just minutes before had had his picture taken by his daughter, Emily, in front of the brick. "I'm forever grateful for it. It was one of the best gifts I've ever gotten." Is a Proposed Will Co. Gas Station-Car Wash a Bad Idea? (Poll)

Some Tinley Park residents and officials are upset over the possibility of a Lenny's Gas N Wash opening at 194th Street and Harlem Avenue, Sun-Times Media reports. Do you share their concerns? Tell us what you think.

A proposal for a combination gas station-car wash in nearby unincorporated Will County has some Tinley Park residents and officials raising concerns about increased traffic and possible health and safety hazards, according to a Sun-Times Media report. Lenny's Gas N Wash owner Leonard McEnery wants to open a new location near the intersection of 194th Street and Harlem Avenue, the report stated. Along with being a gas station and car wash, the business would be open 24 hours and sell alcohol, the report continued. McEnery opened a similar station in Mokena at 191st Street and 88th Avenue earlier this year. Tinley Police Officers Head to NJ to Help in Wake of Hurricane Sandy

Four Tinley Park Police officers were requested by New Jersey through a mutual aid program to assist with the relief effort after the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy, said Mayor Ed Zabrocki.

The Tinley Park Police Department will be sending four officers to New Jersey to help with relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, said Mayor Ed Zabrocki on Friday night. The department received the request around 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, through a nationwide mutual aid program the village participates in, the mayor said. As of Friday evening, details were still being worked out, including which four officers would be sent east to help law enforcement in the Garden State, Zabrocki said. Those individuals should be chosen by Saturday, Nov. 3, after Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer determines who is available for the assignment, which will probably run for about five days, Zabrocki added. Polish Trade Delegation Meets With Tinley Park Officials to Talk Global Business

About 30 government and business leaders from Gdańsk, Poland, visited the village Friday for a luncheon to learn more about Tinley's partnerships between government and local businesses.

Playing host to foreign trade delegations is the type of activity associated with hubs of global commerce, such as New York City, London, Singapore and Tokyo. Tinley Park usually isn't on that list. But that's 20th-century thinking. At a time when technology has brought cities, as well as people, closer to one another, corporate executives are exploring different financial opportunities that can be found in communities like Tinley. Zabrocki Breaks Party Lines, Backs Democrat Hastings

Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki says he's endorsing Michael Hastings in the 19th District State Senate race because he believes the Democrat is the best candidate for the village.

When Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki made the decision to endorse candidates in November's election, his criterion was straightforward. "I look at what person is going to have the best potential to do the most for our community," Zabrocki, a Republican, said this week. READ: Check Out the Bios and Backgrounds of the 2 Candidates in the 19th District It's that guiding principle that led the mayor recently to cross party lines and back Democrat Michael Hastings in the 19th District State Senate race. Calling Hastings "a young, dynamic individual," Zabrocki said he thinks the candidate has the right skills to help the General Assembly solve the state's financial problems. "That doesn't mean I think his opponent is a bad person," Zabrocki said …

D146 Staffers Pound the Pavement for Walk to School Day (Photos)

District 146 faculty and administrators, including Supt. Jeff Stawick, took the scenic route to work, hoofing it to schools as part of this international event. Check out Patch's photos from the day.

Teachers and administrators from schools in Community Consolidated School District 146 strapped on their most comfortable pair of tennis shoes and hit the sidewalks early Wednesday morning to participate in International Walk to School Day. A group of D146 staffers, including Supt. Jeff Stawick, were out at the district's administration center on 171st Street in Tinley Park as early as 6:45 a.m. and hiked about 1.5 miles to Central Middle School. Once there, some of those same staffers were joined by more faculty members, as well as Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki, and they headed back to the administration center. School-Walking Event Another Step in District's Wellness Program

The organizers of District 146 Gets Fit, the school system's wellness initiative, are using Wednesday's Walk to School Day as a way to continue to promote healthy habits among students, staff and even the surrounding community.

This isn't the first year that Community Consolidated School District 146 has participated in International Walk to School Day, which is Wednesday. While it's too early to call it a tradition, the day has become another way for the district to promote healthy habits among students, faculty and even the community. "I think we're at the leading edge of this," said Ron Vandewiel, a PE teacher at Kruse Education Center who is also the coordinator for the District 146 Gets Fit wellness program. "We've pushed a lot of programs with (the Gets Fit initiative)." Tinley Attorney Announces Mayoral Candidacy

If elected, lawyer Steve Eberhardt wants to cut away unnecessary village expenses and make Tinley Park's government more responsive to residents' concerns.

Steve Eberhardt, a Tinley Park lawyer who recently petitioned to have an advisory referendum on village term limits added to the November ballot, announced over the weekend that he was running for mayor in April. Running with a theme of fiscal responsibility, Eberhardt said he wants to streamline village finances by cutting away unnecessary expenses that are passed on to taxpayers. Should Local Elected Officials Have Term Limits?

Tinley Park voters will voice whether the village should impose local term limits in a November referendum. Should your town consider term limits in the future?

Every four years we have a chance to hit the ballot box and cast a referendum on certain candidates in office. Have they done a good enough job during the last term to warrant re-election?  But term limits can change that process entirely, presenting new candidates and pushing out existing officials. Voters in Tinley Park will have the chance in November to vote on whether elected officials in the village should face term limits in the future. Should your town have term limits? VOTE in the poll below!  Attorney Steve Eberhardt filed the petition in Tinley Park after collecting 1,900 signatures. He said he got the idea after noticing the Village Board's "lack of interest" in residents' complaints in 2010.  The question doesn’t specify how …

Petition Filed For Referendum On Term Limits For Tinley Officials

A petition has been filed to hold an advisory referendum on term limits for elected officials in Tinley Park.

Unless there is an objection by Monday, voters in Tinley Park will have the chance in November to vote on whether elected officials in the village should face term limits in the future. A petition containing 1,900 signatures asking the Village Board to hold an advisory referendum on term limits was filed with the Village Clerk’s office on Monday by attorney Steve Eberhardt. The petition asks the village to place the following question on the November ballot:  “Shall the Village Board of the Village of Tinley Park pass an Ordinance imposing term limits on all elected officials?” Village Clerk Patrick Rea said the petition met the state’s standards for advisory referendums. “Unless there’s an objection filed by Monday, the question will be …
