Burros Ban on Pink Has a Lot of People Talking

You see a lot of pink on the football field for Breast Cancer Awareness month. But not on the boys who play youth football in Mokena. A clueless call? Or overreaction?

The boys who play tackle football for the Mokena Burros can no longer garb themselves in shades of pink if they want to remain on the gridiron. So says Burros Athletic Director Sal Della Fave. In an e-mail at the onset of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to his players and coaches, Della Fave laid down the law: Only small, pink stickers can be affixed to helmets. "This is the only approved addition to our uniform," he wrote. "No other pink item is to be added to the uniform ie. socks, laces, duct tape etc. I am holding each of you accountable to ensure compliance." Patch's story about the decision and the ensuing displeasure felt by moms prompted much conversation among Patch's south suburban Facebook fans and followers of Patch sites.  Here'…

Tinley Park Native Uses Facebook to Drum up Childhood Memories

Local resident River Hasnoliver LOVES Tinley Park—so much so that he created a Facebook group to get his message across. You know you're from Tinley if ...

River Hasnoliver sure has a funny way of showing his Tinley Park pride. Not content with a simple “I Heart Tinley Park” bumper sticker, this hometown man turned to social media to get his message across. Hasnoliver is the administrator of the popular Facebook group page, “You Know You’re From Tinley Park, IL if…” “I got the idea while surfing the net one night,” said Hasnoliver, who works as a computer network administrator. “There are fan pages for many of the towns in our area, so I thought, ‘Why not Tinley Park?’ I grew up in Tinley; I lived and worked in Tinley. I have a lot of Tinley Park love ...” It seems many others have a lasting love for our village, too. Since the group's creation in September 2011, Hasnoliver has found himself …

Snots and Lollies by Mail: Are They for You? MomTalk

Parents who fear vaccines use social networking to infect their children with chicken pox and other infectious diseases.

It's one thing not to have your children vaccinated. But it's a truly different story when parents go in search of bodily fluids from total strangers in an effort to infect their children with chicken pox or a myriad of other infectious diseases like measles, mumps and rubella. A story broke this week about a Facebook group, "Find a Pox Party in Your Area," in which parents can locate children with the disease and expose their children in an effort to gain natural immunity. What makes this disturbing is that parents on the site are offering to mail bodily fluids from their sick child to other parents across the United States and Canada. One mother announced on the site that her children had come down with pox. Within 48 hours, lollipops …

I've luckily not had shingles but have seen two adults in my life go through it and years later, my dad can still feel the nerve damage. Clearly, for people who aren't allergic to the vaccine, getting the darn shot is the best way to go! I've also been thinking about the people infected by the purposely infected children. What if someone is older, immune suppressed, or just has a terrible case of…   more ›
