“I’ve been looking forward to this for years,” said Mike Houston, 46, of Palos Hills, after he was the first customer at Peppo’s Dili-Deli in Tinley Park when it opened at 9:30 a.m. Friday at 6905 W. 159th St. “I thought they should have expanded years ago,” said Houston who added he was carrying on a family tradition regarding Peppo’s, which opened in Palos Hills in 1976. “I’m standing in for my brother Dan,” said Houston. “He was the first customer in 1976. He would have been here for this today but he had to work.” “I plan on being the first customer at their next location, too,” he said. So what makes Peppo’s so great. “The guts,” said Houston echoed immediately by the three other people sitting at his table. “You have to eat the sub …

As the weather cools and the trees start to turn, the selection of locally grown produce changes as well. Though local growers may stop carrying your summer favorites, they still have a lot of fresh produce to offer and at a great price. Where should you go for fresh fall produce? Patch assembled a list of what's in season and where it can be purchased, as well as tips for picking your own fresh items. Fall produce usually includes apples (limited quanties this year), Asian pears, beans, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, grapes, greens, gourds, peppers, pumpkins, raspberries, squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and watermelons. What will the Konraths of Tinley Park do every Saturday morning, now that the Tinley Park Farmers Market is done for the season? "Bundle," Amanda Konrath said, laughing. "Once it gets cold." Amanda Konrath has taken her daughters, Katrina, 6, and Rebekah, 4, to the farmers market held at the Metra station on Oak Park Avenue every weekend, she said. What started as a springtime activity for the Konraths turned into a summertime one and, on Saturday, an autumn one as the girls looked for Halloween pumpkins. Katrina has two costume ideas in the works – one for trick-or-treating, one for school. "A princess fairy (for home) and for my …

The end is near. Well, at least for the 2010 season of the weekly Tinley Park Farmers Market. Next Saturday's fair will be the last for the year, organizers said. It re-starts the first Saturday in June. It is held at the Metra parking lot at the Oak Park Avenue stop. And although rain cut short many shoppers' trips through the market's veggies, crafts and snow cones, here's a selection of moments from 2010's second-to-last event.
