D161 Parents Attend Fundraiser to Support Mary Drew School

In a symbolic gesture, community members from the Summit Hill school district came out Thursday to the Cooks Night Off event run by the elementary's school community organization.

The last time Summit Hill School District 161 parents came to show support for Mary Drew Elementary School--at Tuesday's special meeting where the board of education voted to close the school starting in 2012-13--the atmosphere was loud, heated and contentious. That was in stark contrast to the mood at Thursday's Cooks Night Off at Wendy's in Tinley Park where district parents and community members came together for the Mary Drew School Community Organization fundraiser. READ: Board Votes Again; Mary Drew to Close Next School Year The event, which is held the first Thursday of every month, raises money for the Mary Drew SCO, which uses it to fund student parties, assemblies and other activities. The wrinkle this Thursday was that many of …

Wheelchair Benefit Was a Christmas Suprise for Family: VIDEO

Knowing the family of a handicapped man with a broken wheelchair would turn down help, neighbors organized a fundraiser to buy a new chair in secret.

The tires pop in summer. The touch-screen Connor Gill, 18, uses to communicate with the world is held on with a rubber band. The "brains" of the chair broke down around Thanksgiving, leaving Gill stranded for 10 weeks as his father repeatedly called New Zealand to get the company to honor their warranty. Even Friday night, as Gill moved among the crowd at a fundraiser to get him a new motorized wheelchair, he was puttering along at about 50-percent power. Insurance bought the chair that is Gill's sole means of moving among the world, but doesn't cover repairs. But the friends and neighbors who organized the "Have a Heart for Connor" fundraiser at Summit Hill Junior High had to do it in secret. They knew the Gill family would turn it down…

A Popcorn Predicament: Cub Scouts Must Sell Surplus of Snack

After a slight mishap when ordering Cub Scout Pack 341's popcorn supplies, leaders and the scouts are left with $3,000 worth of extra popcorn—and the pack will have to sell it all.

There is such a thing as too much popcorn, and Cub Scout Pack 341 learned that the hard way: $7,000 worth of the snack packaged up in 360 bags and boxes in one leader's garage. "This is major, bigtime popcorn," said an astonished Jason Akai, committee chair for Pack 341. Packages of caramel and kettle, chocolate-coated and cheese, popped and microwaveable kernels are stacked nearly 6-feet high in his garage. An ordering snafu nearly doubled the group's annual shipment for the popcorn sales, one of the pack's biggest fundraisers. All that popcorn has landed them in a pickle—Akai and leaders must find a way to sell it.  To date, the group of first- through fifth-graders have sold $1,500 of the popcorn. The popcorn sale is a fundraiser for …

Update for this evening - we have about $3300 left to sell. Half of that is out and assigned to Pack leaders, which is a good sign because they might be able to sell directly to their friends faster than this. We're also talking to some local businesses about helping move the product. Lots of caramel corn, and microwave kettle corn and butter lite, as well as popping corn left.   more ›

Cook-Off Warm-Up: Two Local Chili Lovers Tell Us How They Like It

Lincoln-Way North High School holds its annual chili cook-off Saturday.

What makes a good chili? That's what the judges at the Fourth annual Lincoln-Way North High School Chili Cook-Off will determine Saturday. The fundraiser, which benefits L-W North's athletic programs, runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school's cafeteria, and it costs 50 cents to sample each recipe. We, however, decided to get a jump on the flavorful fun and ask two local connoisseurs how they like their chili. The chili Bandera serves at her restaurant has a earned quite a tasty reputation in the village. And the secret to her savory success is pretty straightforward. "Use simple and fresh ingredients," she said. "It doesn't have to be totally off the wall. This (chili I make) is specifically for the restaurant. And everything is fresh…

Put on 'Smiles' for Tinley Park Girl Battling Nervous System Disorder

Sarah Panozzo has been battling neurofibromatosis most of her young life—but she's still smiling. Show your support for the youngest daughter of St. Damian Athletic Director Jim Panozzo Sunday, Oct. 16.

Tinley Park resident Jim Panozzo and his wife Joanne first became concerned about their daughter Sarah when she was 6 months old. They noticed what seemed to be extra birthmarks on her neck, said Jim Panozzo, athletic director at St. Damian School in Oak Forest. His wife Joanne, a pediatric nurse, worried about a different diagnosis. Doctors confirmed her fears—Sarah has neurofibromatosis, a progressive disorder that causes tumors to form on nerves anywhere in the body at any time during an individual’s lifetime. The tumors can cause chronic pain, disfigurement, deafness, blindness and death. The disease is linked to many of the most common forms of cancer, brain tumors and learning disabilities. At 6 months old, one tumor had grown on …
