New Year's Tip: How To Safely Open A Bottle of Champagne

The American Academy of Ophthalmologists offers some good advice on safely opening a bottle of champagne without poking your eye this New Year's Eve.

This pressure can cause a champagne cork to shoot at 50 miles per hour as it leaves the bottle—fast enough to …

Where are the Best Holiday Lights in Tinley Park? (Updated)

We're making a map. We're checking it twice. We're going to find out which homes are fancy and bright. Tell us where your favorite decorations and light displays are in the village.

With temperatures dropping and snow flurries briefly visiting the south suburbs Monday, Tinley Park is beginning to feel like it's getting into the holiday spirit. Of course, one of the best indicators that Christmas is right around the corner is the abundance of elaborate decorations and lights throughout village neighborhoods. Readers have been asking on the Tinley Park Patch Facebook page where some of the best holiday displays are in town. That's why I've put together a map that locates some of the neighborhoods with homes that have caught my eye. But this just gets the ball rolling. Tell me where your favorite light-draped houses and inflatable Santa-adorned lawns are in Tinley Park. Think your neighbor has a classy spread? Have a …

Together We Cope Provides Christmas for Local Kids in Need

The Tinley Park-based organization, which serves families across the southwest suburbs, says need is increasing.

Together We Cope and its Adopt a Child program hopes to create Christmas smiles for nearly 1,800 south suburban children this holiday season. Instead of empty stockings, these children will be able to unwrap gifts given to them by strangers who care. READ: Ways to Give Back for the Holidays In these ongoing difficult economic times, Together We Cope turns to the communities it serves and asks for help. In turn, the organization help individuals and families in need in four townships: Bremen, Orland,  Palos and Worth. The communities they serve include Tinley Park, Orland Park, Oak Forest and 24 other nearby towns. When it comes to the annual gift drive, the sponsors have been generous, according to Margaret Seltzner, communications manager…

Cope is such an amazing organization. So little goes to their operating costs, which means they give out so much in the way of items, food, and financial support to people who are struggling. If anyone is looking for a place to donate stuff, money, or time this holiday season, I strongly urge you to check out Cope. These are people doing good right here in our community.
