Officials at Memorial Elementary School recently found out that the school faces federal sanctions, which include allowing parents to transfer their child to another school in the district, because it did not reach its Annual Yearly Progress goals for 2012 as part of the federal No Child Left Behind program. Parents were informed about the sanctions and what it could mean to students in a packet sent out late last week. Memorial and Community Consolidated School District 146 administrators also will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, to answer questions and concerns. Summit Hill district schools also saw an overall increase in the percentage of students meeting and exceeding standards on the state test.
The percentage of Summit Hill School District 161 students passing the 2010-11 Illinois Standard Achievement Test rose by about 1 percent from last year and remained 10 percent higher than the state. Overall, 92.1 percent of students scored at the meets standards and exceeds standards levels of the ISAT, up from 91.3 percent last year, said Interim Superintendent Barb Rains at Friday's continuation of September's last school board meeting. Why do they only allow reading intervention through 2nd grade though, if a child really needs the extra help in reading? A parent can help, but it would be nice if the school would offer a program for the older children who still need help. It's just not offered though.   more ›
