This Week's Pets: 5 Energetic Mastiff Mix Pups

PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park is on the prowl for homes for five puppies that won't be small for long. At around 3 months old, they are already tipping the scales at about 30 pounds.

If you're looking for a loving, loyal furry friend and have the necessary room to house a "gentle giant," consider adopting any of five Mastiff-mix puppies from PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park. Vinnie, Kevin, Cindy, Raymond and George, now around 3 months old, were taken to the shelter about a month ago by a Harvey dog owner whose Mastiff had an unwanted pregnancy, volunteers said Monday.  They were sick with canine parvoviris, a contagious viral infection of the intestinal track, but miraculously, all survived. They now have an exemplary bill of health and if you see them play together, you'd never know they were ill in the first place. Brothers Kevin and Vinnie rolled around on the lawn outside PAWS Monday afternoon, nibbling and …

This Week's Pets: Cool, Laid-Back Cats

Stanley and Joanie, the shelter's longest resident, are ready for a new home.

I've got a pair of easy-going cats for you this week. Stanley Stanley is a 3-year-old orange Domestic Short Hair who is as relaxed as a cat can be. He's just happy to lie in a bed all day and is incredibly easy to get along with. The people at PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park assure me that he's a gem and doesn't mind being picked up. Stanley is a bit shy so you might see him bury his head occasionally. Joanie This 5-year-old black Domestic Short Hair is the longest resident at Tinley Park PAWS. Joanie came to the shelter in January 2011 and made a home among the other cats. But she is definitely ready to find a new home. Just like Stanley, Joanie will be a little shy with new people but will quickly warm up to you. She loves being pet …

This Week's Pet: Urlacher, a Perfect Fit for a Bears Fan

This week, we bring you an adoptable lab mix.

Need a pal to relax with you for Monday night football? We've found him for you in this affectionate 6-year-old labrador mix who loves to explore. Urlacher is a sweet pup who first came to PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park on Sept. 4. He's neutered, healthy and ready to find a home to call his own. He's also great with kids and responds to general commands. Heck, maybe you can teach him to run the "I" formation. Hut, hut ... hike! Contact PAWS Animal Shelter for information on how to adopt Urlacher or any other pet. Last week's featured friend, Buddy the beagle was still up for adoption as of Monday. Here are some more pets that were still available Monday. Peruse them. You might just fall in love. Oh, and here are plenty of other great …

Photo Gallery: Volunteers Spread Suds and Soak up the Sun for Furry Friends

Volunteers hosted a car wash in Tinley Park on Saturday. All proceeds will go toward PAWS Animal Shelter.

The line of cars around a Tinley Park restaurant grew so long Saturday, you'd think it was giving away free gas. It was not. Boston's Gourmet Pizza was actually hosting a fundraiser for PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park. The people in line were waiting for car washes. "We actually began raising money July 1st," said Lisa Helwig-Bova, community relations coordinator for Boston's, who added that $2,000 was raised before Saturday's event. She said servers at the restaurant had been giving out cards asking for customers' donations to the shelter. They'd also been spreading the word about the upcoming wash. John Greenan, animal therapy coordinator at PAWS, was among volunteers lending a hand to scrub a dub dub. "This is a great opportunity for…
