Breast Cancer in Young Women: Resources and Statistics in the Southland

Breast cancer isn't age specific. Here's how to cope with treatments and augmentations if you are diagnosed earlier in life.

Generally speaking, a woman in Illinois has a one in 124 chance of getting breast cancer, according to this breast cancer statistics chart from komen.org. An American woman in her 30s has a one in 232 chance of getting the disease, and a woman 20 years her senior has a one in 42 probability, according to the website. “Although we aren’t certain, the cause of breast cancer in younger women is likely caused by a genetic predisposition,” says Ann H. Partridge, M.D., M.P.H., the medical oncologist director of the Adult Survivorship Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Sisterhood of South Suburban Breast Cancer Survivors: Share Your Story

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we asked Southland women to share their breast-cancer experiences with us. We gathered their wisdom here. Share your story in the comments or upload a photo of an inspirational survivor in your life.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the greatest challenges for those who have been newly diagnosed is finding sources of support. Patients are eager for information on everything from enduring surgery and chemotherapy to how to deal with hair loss. While there are many local resources and support groups available in the Southland, women can also find comfort in a sisterhood of survivors who have already been in their shoes. Best selling author and breast cancer survivor Barbara Delinsky has gathered the wisdom of hundreds of breast cancer survivors who are eager to inspire those who are new to the “breast cancer sisterhood.” She shares all of the stories and tidbits she found in her book "Uplift: Secrets from the …

Kim, thank you for sharing your story. It couldn't have been easy, especially given the fear you're still experiencing. You've come a long way, it seems, and I hope someone reaches out to you. Might I recommend a support group? FBI Releases 2010 Crime Stats for South Suburbs

Curious about the number of crimes reported in your Patch town in 2010? We've got the FBI tally.

The FBI released its 2010 Uniform Crime Report Monday. The south and southwest suburbs served by the Patch network in Cook and Will counties are listed below in charts for violent crimes and property crimes. The data reflect communities that reported crime statistics for all 12 months of 2010. Due to a change in state reporting methods, Illinois statistics from 2010 cannot be compared to 2009 statistics, according to the FBI. Chicago Heights and Orland Hills were not included in the FBI's release of data. Town The FBI cautions against using this data to rank police departments and community crime rates. When the FBI determines an agency’s data collection methodology does not comply with national UCR guidelines, that agency’s information …

South Suburban Residents Reflect on the Death of Osama bin Laden

Patch features 2 days of stories about how local people reacted to the latest victory in the war on terror.

Thousands of troops have lost their lives, including many from the south suburbs. Late Sunday night, the news of Osama bin Laden's death began to spread. Patch spoke with dozens of locals about their thoughts on this abrupt ending to a chapter in American history. Yet for many, it is hardly an ending. New Lenox resident Bernadine Lowell's son Jacob died nearly four years ago while serving in Afghanistan.
