Drew Peterson Gets Date to Fight For New Murder Trial
A two-day hearing was set to determine whether wife-killer Drew Peterson will get another murder trial.
Drew Peterson's murder trial lasted 24 days. Now the wife-killer's looking forward to a two-day hearing to see if he gets to do the whole thing over again. Judge Edward Burmila scheduled the hearing for Feb. 19 and 20. If the judge decides after those two days not give Peterson a new hearing after all, Burmila said he will head straight to sentencing. Peterson, 59, faces up to 60 years in prison for the March 2004 murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Prosecutors have subpoenaed Peterson's second wife, Victoria Connolly, and one of his five sons, Eric Peterson, to testify against him at the sentencing hearing. Drew Peterson Murder Trial: 8 in the Box
Eight jurors were chosen in Drew Peterson's trial for the alleged murder of his third wife Kathleen Savio.
Will County Judge Edward Burmila held a marathon jury selection session Monday and empaneled eight jurors for the Drew Peterson murder trial. It was the very first day of jury selection and Burmila kept 31 of 40 prospective jurors for nearly 12 hours—past 9 p.m. Eight more people are needed for the 12-person jury and the four alternates. Peterson, who appeared in court in a gray jacket, dark pants, a new haircut—and without his trademark mustache—stands accused of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Savio was found drowned in a dry bathtub in March 2004. Will the Words of Foreboding Uttered by Drew Peterson's Wives Be Allowed Into His Trial?
The appellate court heard arguments about whether to allow hearsay evidence at Drew Peterson's murder trial but will wait weeks, if not months, before making a decision.
Over at Bolingbrook Patch, editor Joseph Hosey is covering the latest legal turn in the Drew Peterson case. And it's a big one. Today, his lawyers went before the appellate court and argued for the dismissal of hearsay evidence against the accused killer and notorious police officer. You may recall that Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow drafted a controversial new state law that would allow prosecutors to use statements made by the late Kathleen Savio at her ex-husband's trial, as well as statements made by Stacy Peterson, his fourth wife, who's been missing since 2007 and is presumed dead.
