Update: Lockdown Lifted at D230, D140 Schools after Search for Bank Robber

A police search for a robbery suspect forced a soft lockdown in area schools Tuesday, following a bank robbery at 167th and 80th Avenue.

Update, as of 11:47 a.m.  Area schools were on soft lockdown Tuesday afternoon, as Tinley Park Police searched for a suspect in a bank robbery. Police were looking for a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a grey hoodie, black hat and dark pants, who is suspected of robbing First Midwest Bank at 167th Street and 80th Avenue Tuesday around 10:15 a.m., according to Tinley Park Police Cmdr. Steve Vaccaro. The suspect did not infer or display a weapon during the robbery, Vaccaro said. He was last seen on foot, heading westbound from the bank. Tinley Park police officers were unable to find him. The incident has been turned over to the FBI.  Update, as of 11:40 a.m. Victor J. Andrew and District 140 schools are no longer on soft …

School Rivalry Behind Stagg Brawl and Student Arrests

Kevin Walsh is accused of pushing a police officer after a basketball game at Stagg High School.

Although "a healthy rivalry" exists between Andrew and Stagg high schools, incidents such as the Dec. 7 brawl in which one student is accused of pushing a police officer aren't representative of the relationship the District 230 schools share, a district spokeswoman said. In these cases, the "poor decisions" of a small group of students take away from the positive things that go on between Stagg and Andrew, said Carla Erdey, spokeswoman for District 230. "The students work together on a lot of projects in their communities," Erdey said. Kevin P. Walsh, 18, is charged with battery to a police officer, resisting arrest and mob action following a Dec. 7 basketball game at Stagg High School in Palos Hills. Two juveniles also face charges …

The article says, "She believes the three students were standing up for their fellow students during the fight." When is it ever ok to assualt a uniformed police officer? I hope the All-conference linebacker who did this receives proper punishment.   more ›

Student Hit Cop after Stagg-Andrew Basketball Game: Police

Kevin P. Walsh, 18, of Tinley Park, is charged with battery to a police officer, resisting arrest and mob action. Two juveniles also were arrested after the Andrew vs. Stagg basketball game.

A Tinley Park man and two juveniles have been charged after struggling with police after a recent Stagg High School basketball game. Kevin P. Walsh, 18, is charged with battery to a police officer, resisting arrest and mob action, according to Palos Hills police. One juvenile who police said was being unruly was charged with mob action. A second juvenile also involved is accused of mob action and resisting police. After a disturbance inside a basketball game at Stagg against Andrew High School on Dec. 7, students that were being escorted outside by police became more unruly and fought with officers, police said. A District 230 official said administrators from both schools quickly responded to an altercation inside the school after the …

I was not at the game but for 41 years i was a teacher at Simeon High School and later at Bogan High School.I probably attended a thousand high school sporting events.Even thought what has been described amounts to nothing it should not have happened in the first place. Hidden Costs Could Plague District 230

As officials examine the 2012 property tax levy, worry grows over shortfalls that might hit the district.

An Orland Park mall's property tax dispute with Cook County and declining funds from the state could cause multimillion-dollar shortfalls for District 230, officials said Thursday. The dire forecast comes as the Consolidated High School District 230 School Board adopted resolution on an estimated property tax levy that includes a $1.4 million increase over what district taxpayers were billed last year. Even with some major shifting of funds, the district needs a 1.5 percent hike for the 2012 levy to help cover costs. The estimated levy, totaling about $100 million, was approved in a 4-1 board vote Thursday night inside Victor J. Andrew High School in Tinley Park. A final levy will need board approval in December before it can be submitted …

D230 Officials Look to Bring Friendlier Drug-Sniffing Pooch to Area Schools

A fresh face could be roaming the halls next year of high schools in Palos Hills, Tinley Park and Orland Park.

Officials are hoping their new K9 selection will be friendlier than German Shepherds and Rotweilers, while also sniffing out drugs, gun powder and alcohol in local schools. Consolidated High School 230 board members are looking to bring a golden retriever named Goldie to their three area campuses—Sandburg in Orland Park, Andrew in Tinley Park and Stagg in Palos Hills, according to TribLocal.  The suggestion comes from the Houston, Texas, company, InterQuest Detection Canines, the story said. Triblocal reports: The dog is docile and we like the fact that this isn’t a growling dog,” Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Kim Dryier said. “This isn’t a scare tactic. It’s just another way to keep things out of our schools that do not belong…
