Spring has arrived in Tinley Park , and the sunny songs of robins aren't the only things in the air, accompanying it. Pollen hitched a ride, too. Thanks to the effects of climate change, allergy experts say this season's pollen count in the United States, will be highest ever, especially in the Northeast, thanks in part to Superstorm Sandy. Those same experts say pollen counts could increase by 30 percent in seven years and double in 27 years. In 2000, U.S. pollen counts averaged about 8,400 grains per cubic meter of air; those counts could hit almost 22,000 grains per cubic meter of air by 2040, according to findings released last fall at the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in Anaheim, Calif. It has been said that it's far better to have a neighbor who's near than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, Va., and Baltimore.
