More Air Conditioners Disappear in Tinley Park

Police are investigating a string of thefts that left local businesses hot and bothered.

Tinley Park police are investigating the theft of more than 30 air conditioners in three communities that have disappeared in the night. In the past two months, about 35 air conditioners have been stolen from Tinley Park, Oak Forest and Orland Park during the overnight hours, according to police reports. In Tinley Park, eight of the units were taken from between the 5100 and 8000 blocks of 159th Street. About 20 total of the 35 stolen units were taken from Tinley Park locations, according to police. Tinley Park police have conducted at leat one extended stake out of businesses in the village in response to the thefts. In several of the heists, power cables were cut on the units. Cold Criminals Grab Air Conditioners in Tinley Park

Large air conditioners used at area businesses have been reported stolen in recent weeks.

Cold-blooded criminals are making off with large air conditioners in Tinley Park. Just in time for warm weather, thieves have snatched at least 10 air-conditioning units from businesses in the past two weeks, according to Tinley Park police. One air conditioner was reported stolen sometime between March 30 and March 31 from behind Beyer Chiropractic, 17025 S. Harlem Ave., according to a report. The newer-model Tappen-brand unit was sitting on a concrete pad near the rear entrance to the business. The power cable and refrigerant lines were broken, according to a report. Air One Air Solutions Inc. This has been an issue in south Florida ever since the economy crashed but mainly with central air conditioning systems. Vacant homes due to foreclosure are targets from previous owners, evicted tenants and sometimes even neighbors. Laughing Driver Draws DUI Charge: Blotter

SATURDAY, MARCH 16 Tadeusz Tylka, 44, of the 7200 block of 173rd Street in Tinley Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08 and improper lane use, according to a report. Tylka was seen striking the curb twice by an officer at about 2:21 a.m. on Harlem Avenue, near 171st Street. During a traffic stop, the officer noted Tylka’s bloodshot, watery eyes and a smell of alcohol coming from his breath. He allegedly failed field sobriety tests, during which he was laughing and “very talkative.” He was arrested, taken to the Tinley Park Police Department and given a breath test. TUESDAY, MARCH 12 Tahera A Memon, 57, of the 7800 block of Park Central Drive in Tinley Park, was charged with retail theft, according to a report. Employees of Super K, 16300 S. Harlem Ave., said Memon was stopped after she was seen removing three AT Dri shorts from a display, covering them with a plastic bag in a shopping cart and leaving the store. TUESDAY, MARCH 12 A 19-year-old Chicago Heights woman lost two gold-and-diamond rings while at work, according to a Tinley Park Police report. She told police she removed the rings while at her work station at Regency Beauty, 15931 Harlem Ave. The woman knocked the rings to the ground but didn’t pick them up immediately, the report stated. When the woman went to retrieve the rings later, she found that they had gone missing, the report continued. She and several students who work there searched the entire shop but were unable to find the rings. The report lists the value of the rings at $500. SATURDAY, MARCH 9 A 39-year-old Tinley Park woman told police she believed her Discover card was being used without her consent, according to a Tinley Park police report. She had received an email confirmation from Hot Wire regarding a hotel reservation at La Quinta Inn in Tinley Park for March 7, which was made without her knowledge. She also discovered an order for $116.88 made with another business that she did not authorize. She called Discover and canceled her credit card before making the report with police. MONDAY, NOV. 26 Police seized a counterfeit $50 bill used at Hobby Lobby, 7061 W. 159th St. An employee at the store contacted police around 7 p.m. after he thought a customer passed a fake $50 bill to pay for a purchase, according to the report. The responding officer checked the bill and said it appeared to be a bleached $5 bill, the report stated. The customer said she received the bill as change but couldn't remember from where, the report continued. The bill was turned over to the U.S. Secret Service, the report stated. SUNDAY, NOV. 11 Benjamin D. Reardon, 24, of the 16500 block of Blossom Lane, was charged with driving under the influence, driving without insurance, speeding and disobeying a traffic control device after a traffic stop near the intersection of 167th Street and Harlem Avenue, according to police reports. A Tinley Park Police officer saw Reardon run a red light at Harlem Avenue around 2:50 a.m., as he drove his red, 1996 Dodge Stratus southbound on Harlem Avenue, the report stated, adding a Cook County Sheriff's officer already was pursuing Reardon. Two women face retail theft charges after being accused of stealing almost $200 worth of merchandise Nov. 6 from Super Kmart in the 16300 block of Harlem Avenue in Tinley Park, police report. The women each had a child with them during the incident and told Tinley Park Police that they took the clothes because they had no money. READ: Cash Register, Cigarettes Stolen During Tobacco Shop Break-In Tiffany E. Porto, 22, of the 15300 block of Merlin Court in Oak Forest, was charged with felony retail theft because she had a previous retail theft conviction in Lake County and served 30 days in jail for it, the report stated.
