Tim Lash, an eighth-grader at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran School, beat out other Tinley Park students to win the Tinley Park Fire Department's fire prevention poster contest. Part of his award was a ride to school on a fire engine Thursday.

Lash beat out other eighth-graders to win the annual Tinley Park Fire Department poster contest a second consecutive time. On Thursday morning, Mary and Ken Lash watched as their son, Tim arrived at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran School on a fire truck. They stood and watched him at the same place last year. "It's pretty exciting that he can do it twice" said Ken Lash. As the fire engine pulled to the west side of the school, his classmates, teachers and Principal Steve Stec applauded and greeted him as he hopped out of the fire truck. As everyone wanted to take a picture, Tinley Park Public …

Firefighters from the Tinley Park Fire Department put out a house deck fire early Thursday morning that was caused by a cooking device, Chief Ken Dunn said. No one was injured, and most of damage was confined to the deck and the device, Dunn said. Crews responded to a call at 3:48 a.m. about a fire in the back of a house in the 17200 block of 71st Court, Dunn said. Upon arrival, firefighters saw the blaze was on the covered deck, which was attached to the house, and were able to extinguish it quickly, he added. The fire appeared to have started because combustible materials were too close to the cooking device, which appeared to be built into the deck, Dunn said.
