Like other towns across the country, Tinley Park will hold a Veterans Day ceremony Sunday to honor the men and women from the community who have served in the military. And while Sunday's event also will dedicate the Veterans Plaza at the renovated 80th Street Metra Station to Patrick Rea, a retired brigadier general and current village clerk, the Tinley Park ceremony stands out for another reason: It shows yet again the strong, long-standing bond the village has developed with its veterans. READ: New Veterans Plaza to be Dedicated to Rea "Tinley Park is very veterans-friendly," said American Legion Post 615 Cmdr. Bob Shaffner, a U.S. Army veteran who fought in Vietnam. "Just about everything we need they help us out. … They help us out as…

Police said a good samaritan called them earlier this month when he heard commotion outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars building at 17147 S. Oak Park Ave., in Tinley Park. Sure enough, a burglar was inside.
A man who tried burglarizing the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post earlier this month was scared off by a neighbor who warned him, "I called the police." Officers said they combed the adjacent woods and creek in search of the suspect to no avail. He reportedly shattered a window on the northeast side of the VFW Post 2791 building around 3 a.m. on March 17. That's when a neighbor in the 17100 block of Oak Park Avenue heard the commotion, police said. "He was sleeping and heard what appeared to be somebody moving garbage cans on the side of the VFW hall," the report said, of the neighbor's account. " … A few moments later, he heard glass shattering." When the neighbor looked out, he saw a figure inside the bar area of the business. He …

Gov. Pat Quinn stopped at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Friday afternoon to sign a Senate bill that aims to help veterans who are also business owners.
When U.S. Army veteran Paul Dillon came back from Vietnam, nobody seemed to notice. "Now, it's a wonderful thing to see everybody caring," said the Tinley resident, who owns a Chicago-based consulting firm. "It's about time." Dillon was among a group of about 75 supporters gathered Friday afternoon at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2791 in Tinley Park, anxiously awaiting a visit from Gov. Pat Quinn. He signed Senate Bill 1270 at the event, which he said will help boost small businesses owned by Illinois veterans, like Dillon. Under the law, the state will set an annual goal of 3 percent of every state contract to be earmarked for businesses owned by servicemen. Those businesses must take in $75 million or less in annual gross sales, …

Tom Miller, 58, of Tinley Park, is proud of the original steel body on his bright red 1934 Ford three-window coupe and he chafes when people ask who "made" what they assume is a fiberglass replica. "I know who made mine," he laughs. "Henry Ford made mine." Miller was one of about 80 car owners who brought their classic cars to downtown Tinley Park Sunday for the first "Support Your Troops" car show put on by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Bremen Post 2791. All proceeds from the event, which organizers hope to make a yearly one, will go to the care packages the post ship each month to troops stationed overseas. "There was a handful of club guys sitting around the club bar and we're all in that age group – late 50s, early 60s – and we were …
