Hundreds of people lined up to break bread with Whole Foods staff and Orland Park officials to open the new grocery store Friday morning. Crowds poured into the store throughout the day.
Whole Foods in Orland Park has opened. The new 27,500 square-foot grocery store opened with a bread-breaking ceremony outside the main entrance Friday morning, where hundreds of people waited for the doors to open. With a DJ playing songs, Whole Foods staff and Orland Park officials tore pieces off a large braided loaf of bread before opening the doors to the new store. Crowds continued to visit and shop well into Friday night. See the behind-the-scenes efforts in our pre-opening gallery. Jim Saplis has been involved with cycling since he was old enough to reach the pedals. “I managed bike stores and turned several stores around on other people’s dimes,” he said. “So, I decided the time was right to do it for myself.” To that end, Saplis bought Orland Park Cyclery at 14445 John Humphrey Dr. in Orland Park, earlier this month. The shop will celebrate its reopening with Saplis as owner on Saturday, Nov. 3, and Sunday, Nov. 4. “Everything in the store will be on sale,” he said. There also will be vendor exhibits, giveaways, food and fun, he said. Saplis, 47, said Orland Park Cyclery will be a lot different under his ownership. “I have expanded the number of high-end bikes,” he said. “We now have bikes that run up to $7,000.” …

Peppo’s Dili-Deli, a popular sub shop since 1976 in Palos Hills, is coming to 6905 W. 159th St. in Tinley Park. “We’re hoping to be open in early October,” said Robert Peplowski, 28, a partner in the business and the son of its founder, Jim Peplowski. Both men live in New Lenox. “We’ll have the same menu as the Palos Hills location,” said Peplowski, who added that the sub shop might have additional expansion plans in mind. “If it works out in Tinley, we’ll open more,” he said. “We’ll continue to move south.” The Tinley location will employ about 10 people, Peplowski said. “We’re now taking applications online.” For information, call 708-237-1755 or visit online at Peppo’s Dili-Deli or check out the sub shop's Facebook page. Construction is under way on the Whole Foods Market in the former Borders at 15260 S. LaGrange Road in Orland Park and the grocery store is expected to open this fall. “It takes time to turn a former bookstore into a grocery store,” said Orland Park Development Director Karie Friling. “They are also adding a second floor for offices and storage.” The Orland store is one of eight stores the Texas-based chain plans to open this year. At 27,000 square feet, the store is on the small size, especially when compared to a Meijer or Jewel, but Whole Foods prides itself on featuring natural and organic foods that are free of artificial ingredients and hydrogenated fats. The Orland store will be the chain’s first location in the Southland. Whole …
