Will County Board Says 'No' to Harlem Ave. Car Wash

Frankfort Township Residents won a victory over a car wash looking for a zoning change to open near a residential area, WJOL reports

The proposed Lenny's Gas N Wash was turned down on a request for a zoning change by the Will County Board recently. The owners were seeking a zoning change and three special use permits to open a facility on Harlem and 194th Avenues. All three requests were shot down by the Will County Board, according to a WJOL report.  The sticking points were highlighted by Frankfort Township residents at the meeting. Nearby residents showed up to express their displeasure over a car wash that also wanted authorization to function as a liquor-selling convenience store that would be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, WJOL reported. Frankfort Township and Tinley Park residents have been fighting the facility for several months, complaining of the …

I live in Brookside Glen close to where this gas station will build. I am in support of the gas station and proposed Dunkin Donuts. I do not support the semi filling station there. We have a very difficult time already trying to exit onto Harlem from 194th street and having large trucks running through neighborhoods with small children is not a good idea. This street has single family homes …   more ›

Special Prosecutor Won't Prosecute Will County Board Member's Son

A special prosecutor brought in to try Will County Board member Steve Wilhelmi's son for battery dropped the case but is still going after two pals of the young man. The fathers of these two men are not on the county board.

When Will County Board member Steve Wilhelmi's son was first arrested for allegedly whipping a man with his belt, he only faced charges of misdemeanor battery and mob action. Then the mob action charge went away, and now he's charged with nothing. A special prosecutor called in to try Wilhelmi's 21-year-old son, Alex Wilhelmi of 1108 Taylor St., Joliet, dropped the case Thursday morning. But David Neal of the Special Prosecution Unit of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor's office is still going after the two men arrested along with Alex Wilhelmi on July 1. Daniel Duffy, 23, of 503 Wilcox St. faces a charge of battery and Manuel Borrego, 24, of 319 Hunter Ave. is up for both battery and drunken driving. Duffy and Borrego do not have…

A $1-per-pack tax increase was approved by the Cook County Board on Friday as part of its 2013 budget. What will that mean for village smoke shops if it passes?

UPDATED (1:01 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9): The Cook County Board approved its $2.95 billion budget for 2013 on Friday, Nov. 9, according to the Chicago Tribune. That includes the $1-per-pack cigarette tax increase.  Smoking is an expensive habit in Cook County, and if the county board votes to approve its tentative 2013 budget during a special meeting Friday, it's about to become even pricier. William Burfeind, a village resident since 1986, said in his announcement that he understands the views and concerns of voters and would focus on bringing in more jobs and lowering taxes and fees. In order to do that, the board needs to retain existing businesses while attracting new ones, expanding the county's tax base, he said.
