A day after she was found guilty on eight counts of violation of owner's duties in her animal neglect case, Dawn Hamill, owner of Dazzle's Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, presented her side of the legal proceedings to the court of public opinion, telling a reporter from Sun-Times Media that her biggest mistake was employing the wrong person. “As an owner, I hired the wrong employee," Hamill said, referring to Christine Kelly, who testified against Hamill. "I fired her before I was even arrested. (She was) the worst employee I could have ever hired.” Hamill also was found not guilty on two counts of animal neglect. Dawn Hamill, owner of Dazzle's Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, was found guilty Friday of eight counts of violation of owner's duties and not guilty on two counts of animal neglect.
It took a jury four hours of deliberations Friday, Sept. 14, to find Dawn Hamill guilty of eight of 10 counts against her in a four-day animal abuse trial. Hamill, the owner of Dazzle’s Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, was accused of eight misdemeanor counts of violation of owner's duties in connection to eight puppies reportedly found in cold, filthy conditions during a Feb. 11, 2011, raid on her property. She was found guilty on those eight counts but the seven-man, five-woman jury found her not guilty on two other counts of animal neglect, stemming from the discovery of a miniature horse and a Himalayan cat found dead on the property during the same raid. Six witness took the stand for the prosecution Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the first full day of the trial of Dawn Hamill, who is accused of misdemeanor animal neglect after animals were removed from a raid of her Dazzle’s Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. The trial was briefly delayed while Judge Anna Helen Demacopolous questioned a juror about whether she had been approached by anyone about the case during a recess the day before. "Absolutely not," the juror responded. "No one at all." After there were no questions from the prosecution or the defense for the juror, Demacopolous allowed the trial to proceed. A new bench trial against the owner of Dazzle's Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in Tinley Park is slated for May 2. The mistrial stems from the state's key witness being indicted on federal extortion charges.
A Cook County judge on Monday said a Tinley Park animal cruelty case will start over, ruling it a mistrial on grounds that federal extortion charges recently filed against the state’s key witness have prevented the defendant from getting a fair trial. Cook County sheriff’s police confiscated more than 100 animals from Dazzle’s Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary more than a year ago after a former employee complained of poor conditions.
