Judge: Hamill Must Give Up Animals Pending Psych Evaluation, Pay $8,000 in Fines

A Cook County judge also sentenced Dawn Hamill, owner of Dazzle's Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, to one year of probation and 30 days in a community service program for her conviction on eight misdemeanors.

In a move that a defense attorney called unexpectedly harsh, a Cook County judge sentenced the owner of a Tinley Park animal shelter Tuesday, Oct. 2, to serve a year of probation, enroll in a 30-day county work program and pay $8,000 in fines for her conviction on eight misdemeanor counts of violation of owner's duties. READ: Jury Finds Owner of Animal Rescue Guilty on 8 of 10 Charges Judge Anna Helen Demacopolous also ordered a psychiatric evaluation for the owner—Dawn Hamill, 43—saying that Hamill satisfies the state's legal definition of an animal hoarder. Until results of the evaluation come back, Hamill must surrender the animals at her Dazzle's Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary and can have no more than five personal pets…

it is always a better option for an animal to be put to sleep , rather than to suffer what they had to suffer at painted pastures. Would you rather waste away in a german camp or be put out of your misery??? Why would you let anything suffer???   more ›

Paul, With all due respect, I have worked with Dawn Hamill personally on several projects and the accusations are true. I witnessed with my own eyes when she kicked a dog and justified it with 'I'm teaching him not to jump" Thats not abuse? She has done some good, but for selfish reasons. She does it for the money and small town celebrity status. She is fake outside and inside and not as nice as …   more ›

Jury Finds Owner of Animal Rescue Guilty on 8 of 10 Charges

Dawn Hamill, owner of Dazzle's Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, was found guilty Friday of eight counts of violation of owner's duties and not guilty on two counts of animal neglect.

It took a jury four hours of deliberations Friday, Sept. 14, to find Dawn Hamill guilty of eight of 10 counts against her in a four-day animal abuse trial. Hamill, the owner of Dazzle’s Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, was accused of eight misdemeanor counts of violation of owner's duties in connection to eight puppies reportedly found in cold, filthy conditions during a Feb. 11, 2011, raid on her property. She was found guilty on those eight counts but the seven-man, five-woman jury found her not guilty on two other counts of animal neglect, stemming from the discovery of a miniature horse and a Himalayan cat found dead on the property during the same raid. State Witnesses Testify in First Full Day of Animal Abuse Trial

The condition of animals found during a raid at Dazzle’s Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary was the focus of the testimony for the prosecution's witnesses in the animal abuse trial of owner Dawn Hamill.

Six witness took the stand for the prosecution Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the first full day of the trial of Dawn Hamill, who is accused of misdemeanor animal neglect after animals were removed from a raid of her Dazzle’s Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. The trial was briefly delayed while Judge Anna Helen Demacopolous questioned a juror about whether she had been approached by anyone about the case during a recess the day before. "Absolutely not," the juror responded. "No one at all." After there were no questions from the prosecution or the defense for the juror, Demacopolous allowed the trial to proceed. Assistant State's Attorneys Richard Stake Jr. and Sarah Naughton are prosecuting the case, which is in its second trial …

Painted Pastures Animal Cruelty Case Will Start Over

A new bench trial against the owner of Dazzle's Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in Tinley Park is slated for May 2. The mistrial stems from the state's key witness being indicted on federal extortion charges.

A Cook County judge on Monday said a Tinley Park animal cruelty case will start over, ruling it a mistrial on grounds that federal extortion charges recently filed against the state’s key witness have prevented the defendant from getting a fair trial. Cook County sheriff’s police confiscated more than 100 animals from Dazzle’s Painted Pastures Animal Rescue and Sanctuary more than a year ago after a former employee complained of poor conditions. The raid, spearheaded by Officer Larry Draus, netted Painted Pastures owner Dawn Hamill more than 30 charges related to animal cruelty and neglect.
