Car break-ins can and do happen everywhere. So far over the past month or so — Nov. 4 through Dec. 12 — 16 incidents were reported to Tinley Park police. Burglaries can happen everywhere. And they do. Despite where you live or choose to park your car, you should take steps to safeguard your GPS, purse, wallet and other personal items, Tinley Park Police Cmdr. Steve Vaccaro said. "You have to hide your belongings," he said. "Don't leave things out where people can see them and even if your car is in your driveway, lock your doors." Lately, burglars are targeting unlocked cars or those in parking lots at local fitness centers, Vaccaro said. "When you go to the gym, you leave all of your belongings in the car," he said. Police said someone stole stuff, vandalized vehicles and got into garages on a Tinley Park block this week.
Someone damaged three cars and broke into two garages overnight Tuesday, all in the same Tinley block. Three residents reported the incidents, telling police they likely occurred between 5 p.m. June 20 and 8:30 a.m. June 21, according to the police reports. All lived in the 17000 block of 69th Avenue. The residents said that after parking their cars either in the garage or driveway of their homes the night before, they found damage to their vehicles' front driver's side door handles and locks and in some cases, that items were missing. One resident said his car's passenger-side window had been shattered and about $140 worth of items were stolen from inside, according to the report.
