That's only one (cynical) way of defining it. Carrying that thought to one logical conclusion, I guess it's safe to say Jesus was a communist.
I'm not going to get into an ideological/political argument, I'll just say there are more ways to approach and define social uplift than yours.

Reply"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom." One of his quotes on my mind today.

On the article Cardinal George Says Same-Sex Marriage Is 'Against The Common Good', Do You Agree?

Considering how gay people in our culture are treated, it's hard to imagine anyone who isn't gay would put themselves in the position of pretending to be for tax, health, etc., benefits. It would hardly seem worth the stress and grief. Exhibit A: many of the comments here. If someone 'straight' really wanted to marry for benefits, why would they pretend to be homosexual when there are plenty of hetero people out there who would, and do marry for financial gain? How do we get around the 'fraud' of two hetero people who marry for reasons other than love? It happens ALL THE TIME - It's called a marriage of convenience, and it's not actually a crime. People marry for all sorts of reasons besides love. Marrying for love is pretty recent in human history, and mostly a phenomenon of the Western world.

Not that simple FC. Sure there's intolerance on both sides. There's also acceptance, compassion and tolerance on both sides. There's black and white, and shades of gray all through these comments. Here's my personal take on this: anytime a group of people are treated as less than, it's important. Wanting equal treatment under the law doesn't make someone a victim, or mean they see themselves themselves as victims. There will always be 'more important issues.' That's just one reason this particular one should be easy to settle. No one's forcing their personal beliefs on you.

George, knowing history and believing in (or 'fearing') a particular god, gods, or goddesses is not exactly the same thing. As Deirdre already explained, they're all around us - in the names of the planets, the days of the week, the months of the year, and in the celebration of Christmas, to name just a few places. They are an integral part of culture, whether we recognize them or not.

George, you may want to brush up a little on Roman history and humanities with regard to Roman Gods (and Goddesses!) These might help you get started if you care to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_deities http://www.roman-empire.net/children/gods.html http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/romangods/a/101910-Roman-Gods-And-Goddesses.htm

"Human dignity and human rights are then reduced to the whims of political majorities." Huh? Human dignity and human rights should apply to ALL humans regardless of race, color, religion, creed, disability, AND sexual orientation, and should not be reduced BY the beliefs or whims of religious minorities.

ReplyI get some yuks from antics like these too, and no offense Bob, I also get a few yuks from seeing people correcting the grammar and spelling of other commenters, whether the correction is warranted or not. (Definition of YUK
1 slang : laugh <did it just for yuks>
2 slang : joke, gag (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/yuk)Happy New Year all, whether you say yuk or nyuk. ;~) Cheers!

The Snap 4Dx test is a fairly new diagnostic test that can detect Lyme's, Ehrlichia, and other tick-borne and other vector-borne diseases. Dogs with fevers and with neurological symptoms like hind-end weakness could be suffering from a tick-borne disease. These illnesses are often at least initially accompanied by a fever and not all vets will immediately test for vector-borne diseases.
