Deck Collapses During Party In Tinley Park

At least 14 people were injured Saturday night, when a deck broke away from a Tinley Park house and collapsed.

A deck outside a Tinley Park home collapsed Saturday night during a party, leaving at least 14 people injured.

The Tinley Park Fire Department was called about the deck collapse in the 16700 block of Beverly Avenue around 9:15 p.m., according to Tinley Park Fire Captain Doug Erwin.

"It looks like it fell away from where it was attached to the house," Erwin said.

Initial reports said about 35 people were out on the deck when it collapsed, though the exact cause for the collapse has not been established. How many people the deck was built to hold was not available immediately Saturday, according to Erwin.

"At no point was anyone trapped," Erwin said.

When the area of the deck connected to the house broke, the deck tilted towards the house, Erwin said. A combination of adults and children were on the deck when the collapse happened.

Injured people were taken to Palos Community Hospital and South Suburban Hospital. As of 5 p.m. Sunday, all but one person has been released from care, according to the Village of Tinley Park.

Oak Forest, Orland, Frankfort and Thornton fire personnel assisted at the scene. Engines were leaving the area around 10:30 p.m.
