Tinley Park Man Competes for Cash in a Battle of the Bulbs

Dominic Kowalczyk's holiday decorations go up against others across the country, with homeowners competing for $250,000 in cash and prizes.

Tinley Park resident Dominic Kowalczyk's electric bill soars to $1,600 each December.

That's roughly 200 amps of electricity, pumped into approximately 100,000 lights and 200 figurines adorning Kowalczyk's front lawn—a spectacle he hopes will win him $50,000.

Kowalczyk's home at 17321 Avon Lane is featured in ABC's "Great Light Fight," a new competition series in which 20 families across America decorate their homes to the extreme for Christmas in just 21 days, with a total of $250,000 in prizing ($50,000 won each week).

The families were chosen through an extensive nationwide search based on their previous elaborate Christmas light displays, incredible choreography and over-the-top designs, according to the show’s website.

Kowalczyk and a team of 15 friends and family spent nearly 400 hours piecing together this year's display. Film crews visited Nov. 11 for the unveiling—a work of art the likes of which his neighborhood has never seen. This year's display is set to music, and includes an enormous Santa hat-wearing toucan for "Christmas in Parrotdise" (a tribute to Jimmy Buffett), a giant snowman perched on the roof, walkways lit by twinkling arches overhead—and so much more.

The show will air at 8 p.m. on Dec. 9, 16 and 23 (with back-to-back episodes on the last two nights). Michael Moloney and Sabrina Soto, both from “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” will serve as judges for the series. The Kowalczyk’s episode will air Dec. 23.

He'll officially flip the switch on his display Thanksgiving Day. It runs from 5 to 10:30 p.m. each day. Stop by, roll down your windows (it's not the same without the tunes), and sit back and enjoy the show.
